Wright Ties Record in Win Over Hood

Carlisle, PA - Hollins University Basketball vs Hood College at Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Dickinson College, November 16, 2013

Box Score

After falling in their 2013-14 season opener, the Hollins basketball team was back in action on Saturday night when they played Hood.  The Blazers had lost to host Dickinson in the tournament opener while Hollins came into the game after falling to Widener University, NCAA DIII Preseason #26, by 10 points on Friday night.

Hollins came into the matchup against the Blazers having defeated them in Roanoke, 76-71 (OT), less than a year ago.  Although some of the names have changed, Hollins started the game with the confidence they gained back in early January.  For the opening part of the half, the two teams traded the lead back and forth and with 10 minutes left to go, the score was tied.  Hollins then went on the same late half run that almost pulled off the upset last night, and pushed the lead to as many as nine.  Hollins was able to keep Hood from making a late run and took a six point lead into the break, 30-24.

Hood came out in the second half and tried to take control of the momentum.  The Hollins lead was quickly cut to two, however, Hollins went on a 16-2 run over the next seven minutes to take control of the matchup.  Hollins appeared to have the game in hand but the Blazers wouldn't go quietly.  After seeing their lead cut to 10, Coach Jim Phillips took a timeout to calm his young team and Hollins responded by scoring the games next four points.  Hollins hit their free throws down the stretch and sealed their first victory of the season, 70-59, evening the record at 1-1.

After missing a season opening double-double by one rebound, Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) put forth a record setting performance.  Wright, a 6'0" senior forward, scored a game high 20 points and pulled down, a school record tying, 22 rebounds.  The record was originally set when Kris Schmuck grabbed 22 rebounds against Mary Baldwin College in 1988.  One night after scoring seven points in her collegiate debut, Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) poured in 15 points while adding seven rebounds and a team high four assists.  Senior post player Brandi Chesne (New Orleans, LA) scored 12 points while fellow senior Carrie Cox (Lynch Station, VA) added seven.  Led by Wright, Hollins enjoyed a 59-46 advantage on the glass while hitting 30 of their 40 free throw attempts.

Brittney George led the Blazers with 19 points.  Danni Medovich and Eboni Staples each scored 12 while Staples led Hood with 14 rebounds.

Hollins will go for two in a row when they return home next Tuesday.  Hollins will play host to Mary Baldwin College at 7:00pm in their home opener.  The game, and all Hollins home games, can be seen live on the web with First Team Broadcasting.
