Eagles Comeback Nips Hollins

Bridgewater, VA - Hollins University Basketball at Bridgewater College, February 22, 2014

Box Score

The 2013-14 regular season came to a close on Saturday afternoon as Hollins hit the road for their ODAC finale at Bridgewater College.  After winning their final home game on Wednesday night, Hollins was looking to take a two game win steak into the 12 team ODAC Tournament, slated to begin on Monday night.

As has been the case in most of Hollins recent games, the visitors scored first and established the lead early in the matchup.  Hollins was able to build the lead to five points and hold the lead as the game approached the midway point of the first half.  After the Eagles cut the lead to a single point, Hollins began to pull away after seizing total control of the game.  Hollins used a 17-4 run to close the half and carried a comfortable 14 point lead into the break.

Hollins needed to maintain their lead as Bridgewater came out to start the second frame looking to make a run to get back into the game.  Hollins did exactly what they needed to do and the Eagles were not able to cut the lead into single digits over the first seven minutes of the second frame.  With just over 13 minutes left on the clock, the Eagles started to mount a charge.  Hollins committed eight of their 26 turnovers during a five minute stretch that saw the home team complete to comeback and take their first lead of the afternoon.  Trailing by one with 8:30 left to go, Hollins battled Bridgewater play for play and with five minutes remaining, the game was tied at 59-59.  Hollins enjoyed the next lead of the game but it was short lived as Bridgewater regained the lead and built a six point cushion as the game entered its final minutes.  Hollins pulled to within three but could get no closer and when the final buzzer sounded it was Bridgewater that came away with the 76-72 ODAC win.

Taylor Catron scores

Hollins got a big game by sophomore post player Ella Oakley (Primrose Valley, NSW).  Oakley came off the bench to post a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.  First-year guard Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) scored 16 points and five rebounds while fellow backcourt mate Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) added 10 points, seven rebounds, and three assists before fouling out late in the contest.  Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) connected on four of her five shots from the field and finished with eight points in just 14 minutes of play.  Hollins battled foul trouble and turnovers all afternoon long while the Eagles enjoyed a 38-26 advantage from the free throw stripe.

Holly Morgan led Bridgewater with 20 points and eight rebounds.  Cassidy Burkholder recorded 19 points and three steals while Heather Cantrell added 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Hollins road to the ODAC Championship will start on the road with a trip to Virginia Wesleyan on Monday night.  The Marlins defeated Hollins twice during the regular season but both games were close.  After falling to Virginia Wesleyan at home in overtime, Hollins traveled to Virginia Beach and came up just short, falling by three points.  The game is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm and can be seen on First Team Broadcasting (VWC feed).
