Hollins Still Can't Solve Marlins Puzzle

Virginia Beach, VA - Hollins University Basketball at Virginia Wesleyan College in 2014 ODAC Tournmanet - First Round, February 24, 2014

Box Score

The 2014 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament got started on Monday night with four matchups, including a trip for Hollins to face Virginia Wesleyan College.  It marked the third meeting this season between the conference rivals and second in the past two weeks.  Hollins fell in overtime at home while dropping a their road game by just three points.

After having just made the four hour trip to the eastern shore two weekends ago, Hollins knew what to expect in their quest to advance to the conference quarterfinals in Salem later this week.  Neither team could get much going on the offensive end to start the game.  The Marlins led 1-0 after almost three minutes of action.  The teams traded baskets for much of the first half with both teams enjoying a slim lead.  With less than three minutes to go in the half, the game was tied.  After a Virginia Wesleyan basket, Hollins attacked the basket but came up empty.  A late three pointer by the home team made the score 27-22 at the break.

Hollins had to fell good coming into the second half down just five points considering they only shot 28.6% during the first 20 minutes.  However the Marlins had a different idea and came out smoking hot to start the second frame.  After a Hollins basket, Virginia Wesleyan reeled off 10 straight points to take a 13 point lead.  The visitors began to chip away and cut the lead back under 10.  Every time Hollins cut into the lead, turnovers and continued poor shooting allowed the Marlins to pull away.  As the clock started to run out, Hollins could not find their offensive rhythm to mount any sort of comeback.  27 turnovers and sub 27% shooting was too much for Hollins to overcome and they fell to their hosts, 37-59.

Chanci Wright scores on the inside

Playing in what ended up being her final collegiate game, senior Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) led Hollins with 13 points and eight rebounds.  Wright finished her final campaign as the only player in the conference to average a double-double for the season.  The 6'0" post player finished the season by posting 10.2 points and an ODAC leading 10.6 rebounds per game.  Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) added 10 points and eight boards while her fellow first-year backcourt mate Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) recorded four points and a team high nine rebounds.

Brittany Glasco posted a game high 18 points and four assists to lead the Marlins.  Nancy Kelly added 13 points and five rebounds to lead the home team on the interior while Kerri-Leanne Taylor scored seven points despite hitting just one of her seven attempts fro beyond the arc.

For the second consecutive season, Hollins fell short of reaching the ODAC quarterfinals.  However, a with a deep and talented group of youngsters returning, look for Hollins to challenge the ODAC's best as the 2014-15 season gets started next November.
