Alex Herring

Alex Herring '11: Volleyball and Golf #4

For all Hollins students, the college experience is an opportunity to pursue passions and nurture potential. Hollins athletes, like all Division III student-athletes, are encouraged to engage in this process both in the classroom and on the athletic field. A competitive athletic environment allows student-athletes to seek academic and athletic excellence while developing important life skills. Division III student-athletes are encouraged to take part in the full range of opportunities provided by the university, resulting in a truly comprehensive educational experience.

Senior volleyball-player and former golfer Alex Herring is a particularly good example of a Division III student-athlete who has used her time at Hollins to "follow [her] passions and discover [her] potential." Alex is majoring in mathematics with a concentration in dance. She is also a student in the Batten Leadership Institute, through which she will receive the Batten Certificate in Leadership. She is currently the secretary of the Batten Leadership Board. Alex is undoubtedly guided by the Batten philosophy that seeks to develop a student's potential through personal growth.

On campus, Alex is a member of Exodus, a Christian-based religious group. She also serves as the volleyball representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. As such, she is part of a group that actively seeks to enhance the image of student-athletes on campus and in the community by encouraging the involvement of these student-athletes in campus and community projects. Further, Alex is a team captain in the Senior Legacy Program and is active in Phonathon.

Alex's impact and experience extends beyond the Hollins campus. She helps in local campaigning through her involvement in College Republicans as an active member and club treasurer. This past J Term, Alex completed a competitive internship in New York with the premier global financial services firm, UBS. She has maintained her relationship with UBS as she is currently interning for Trinity Wealth Management, which is a local UBS branch. She has also taken advantage of the opportunity provided to Hollins students to study abroad. While studying in London in the spring of 2010, she interned for a marketing research firm, VBResearch.

Alex has clearly made the most of both the academic and extracurricular opportunities that have been available to her during her time at Hollins. Alex embodies what it means to be a Hollins student as well as a Division III student-athlete.
