How do I get a Hollins e-mail address?

It's easy! Just e-mail or call us at alumnae@hollins.edu or (800) TINKER1 and tell us your full name (including the last name you had at graduation), your class year, your birth date and your social security number. We'll get an account set up for you.

Why would I want a Hollins e-mail address?

  • It's complimentary for alumnae/i
  • No advertisements
  • Web-based so you can check your e-mail anywhere in the world where you have internet access
  • One e-mail address you'll keep for life
  • You get to see Hollins every day, and share the Hollins name with every message you send

What are some features of Hollins WebMail?

  • 50 MB storage quota
  • Secure, encrypted, password-protected access from all over the world
  • Spellchecker in message compose window
  • Vacation or auto-respond messages

What URL should I bookmark to access WebMail?

https://webmail.hollins.edu
(Important - please make sure there is an 's' in https)

What is my username?

Generally, your username is the first initial of your first name, followed by your full last name. (Ex: Susan Sandusky is ssandusky.) If your name is more common, the first tiebreaker for duplicate usernames is to add the middle initial after the first initial. (Ex: Susan J. Smith is sjsmith.) Further tiebreakers are added digits.

What is my initial password?

Your birth date in "mmddyy" format. (Ex: July 12, 1959 is 071259.)

How do I change my password?

After logging in, click on "Options" at the top of the page. On the next page, click on "Password" in the left side menu. Follow the instructions to change your password.

What is the e-mail address for my account?

username@hollins.edu (Ex: Susan Sandusky is ssandusky@hollins.edu.)

Can I forward my Hollins WebMail to another e-mail account?

Yes you can! After logging in to the system, click on "Options" at the top of the page. Click on "Settings" in the left side menu. Under the heading "Mail Forwarding," enter the e-mail address where you would like to receive copies of your mail. *Keep in mind that these are copies. Your mail is still being sent to WebMail, so be sure you empty unwanted messages regularly.

How do I save attachments?

In the e-mail message, you should see a field called "Attachments" under the sender and subject information. Right click on the file name and select "Save Target As...". Choose your destination folder on your computer or disk and select "OK".

How do I delete unwanted e-mail messages?

Log in to Webmail, select the mail messages you want to delete and then click the "Delete" icon (trash can) at the top of the screen.

You select an individual message by clicking in the box to the left of the message. You may select multiple messages at one time by clicking in several boxes. You may also select all the displayed messages for deletion by clicking in the box labeled "Select All." After clicking the "Delete" icon, messages will either be removed from the system, or if you have set the option to send deleted messages to the trash, they will be moved to the "Trash" mailbox. If the messages are being sent to the "Trash" mailbox, you must also open that mailbox by clicking on it, select the messages again and select delete. This is a safety feature to protect against deleting messages you might want to keep. However, it does make it twice as difficult to delete messages from the system. To change mail options, click "Options" and then "Settings."

Troubleshooting common problems:

"Invalid username or password."
Double-check the spelling of your account name. Use the number keys above the alphanumeric keyboard, not the number pad, to type in your password. Non-North Americans should use the American format for their birth date on the initial password, with leading zeros on all single-digit parts (ex: July 12, 1959 = 071259).

You can't get in with your username and password, but you get no error message.
Various peer-to-peer file sharing programs (like Kazaa, Morpheous, Limewire, AudioGalaxy, etc) can install "spyware" on your computer. Because such programs alter the behavior of your browser and redirect you to an insecure location IN THE MIDDLE of log in authentication, WebMail detects this and bumps you back out to the log in page. The solution has several steps:

  • Enable the informational message on your browser that warns you when you move from an encrypted page to an insecure page.
  • During the log in process, when you are warned that you are about to move to an insecure (unencrypted) page and "do you want to continue ?" answer NO.
  • You should proceed successfully though log in (provided you entered the correct username and password.) This solution probably is not necessary if you successfully remove the spyware from your computer.

You have trouble logging in, or menus and buttons don't work correctly.
Make sure you have enabled java script on your browser. Also, verify that you have a recent version of internet browser software. Recommended Browsers:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.1 or better
  • Netscape 6 or better
  • Mozilla is not supported, however, the absolute latest build may work.

Internet Explorer says it cannot display this page, the site is unavailable, etc.
On slower dialup connections, sometimes Internet Explorer "times out" trying to go to a page, if it takes too long to resolve the name or to get a response from the WebMail server. IE has a much faster timeout than Netscape, so you are more likely to get this message. Try to reload the page. If that doesn't work, exit IE and reenter IE and try to reload the page. If problem persists, try at another (perhaps less busy) time or use Netscape. (Netscape has shown to be more reliable than IE on several systems.)

More rarely, there is a problem with the Internet connection to the Hollins campus or there is another problem. If that is the case, you must wait until the problem is resolved. Contact the Hollins Computer Help Desk at helpdesk@hollins.edu or (540) 362-6538 to verify status of the Campus Internet connection or the WebMail server.

If you have another Personal Computer available (e.g. at a public library, etc.) - This offers a way to isolate "wrong username and password issues" from problems with your personal computer browser software. If you have problems and can use another PC system, you might attempt to log in to WebMail from the alternate. If that works, but you still cannot get in from your own personal computer, then investigate the "browser issues" detailed above. If you still have difficulty, contact the Hollins Computer Help Desk at helpdesk@hollins.edu or (540) 362-6538.

Note: The Hollins Computer Help Desk is open Monday-Thursday 8:30am-midnight, Friday 8:30am-4:30pm, and Sunday 3pm-midnight.
