Itinerary

September 23, Friday
USA/PARIS

Depart on an overnight flight to Paris from your nearest gateway city. Dinner and breakfast served on board.

September 24, Saturday
PARIS

Morning arrival at Charles De Gaulle Airport, and transfer to your hotel. The balance of the morning is at leisure.

TOURS
Afternoon – two options
  • "Medieval Paris Today"
    Led by Alice Jouve
  • "19th-Century Shopping Arcades"
    Led by Jill Daneels

Late afternoon –

  • Tour of the Musée Jacquemart André, an early 19th-century hôtel particulier.

Evening –

  • Opening Reception at the home of Wendy Woods Cormier ’88 in Neuilly.
  • Invited guests will include Hollins alumnae based in Paris.
  • En route back to the hotel we will admire the illuminated buildings and nighttime views of Paris.


September 25, Sunday
PARIS

Morning and afternoon are reserved for optional tours and activities designed in conjunction with our Paris-based alumnae and faculty (see below).

TOURS
Morning – three options
  • “Smashing the Renaissance Window: Picasso and Cubism”
    Led by Mary Louise Persons Hoss ’72 at the Picasso Museum
  • "Our Neighborhood in the Marais"
    Led by Gil and Abby L’Hommedieu Dunham ’62
  • "Molière’s & Cyrano de Bergerac’s Paris" and a private visit to La Comédie-Française backstage and hidden corners
    Led by Phillipe Pantet, Hollins Abroad-Paris faculty
Afternoon – four options
  • Tour/discussion of the quartier around Reid Hall, current home of the Hollins Abroad-Paris program
    Led by Susan Gilbert Harvey ’59, who is writing a book about her great-aunt’s life in Paris in 1898. (The last chapter of the book takes place in the garden of Reid Hall.)
  • “Contemporary Paris: Discover how Paris has evolved over the last 20 years”
    Led by Marie-Laure Cadet de Fontenay, Hollins Abroad-Paris faculty
  • "Victor Hugo’s Paris"
    Led by Phillipe Pantet, Hollins Abroad-Paris faculty
  • "Medieval Paris Today" with Alice Jouve

Late afternoon –
  • Gather at Reid Hall, where Hollins Abroad-Paris Director Annick Scouten introduces the current Hollins program and shows us the facilities.
  • A reception at Reid Hall will follow. Dinner and the evening are at leisure.



September 26, Monday
PARIS

TOURS
Morning -
  • A special tour, beginning at the Louvre, focusing on sites mentioned in The Da Vinci Code, the novel written by Dan Brown. Lunch is at leisure.

Afternoon –

  • A private meeting with Ambassador Constance Morella, Permanent Representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), at the U.S. Mission to the OECD.

Evening –

  • Receptions hosted by local Hollins alumnae: Leslie Lykes de Galbert ’72 and Ann Ismay Vallery-Radot ’57. The group will be divided between the two.


September 27, Tuesday
GIVERNY/AUVERS

Morning –
  • This morning we drive to Giverny to visit Monet’s home and garden, designed, planted, and captured in impressionist paintings by its famous creator. Enjoy an artist’s point of view as Mary Page Evans ’59 shares experiences from the time she has spent painting here.
  • Continue to nearby Auvers sur Oise, where Dr. Paul Gachet encouraged the work of Cezanne and Pissarro in the 1870’s, and welcomed Van Gogh in 1890.

Afternoon –

  • After lunch at the Chateau d’Auvers, we will see the sites that inspired these painters, including the church and the Auberge Ravoux where Van Gogh spent his final days. Return to Paris in the late afternoon.

Evening –

  • Receptions hosted by Abby L’Hommedieu Dunham ’62, Nancy Merritt Asthalter ’64, and John and Pat Sisk, parents of Meg Sisk Grimes ’97, at their homes. The group will be divided among the three.



September 28, Wednesday
PARIS
The day is at leisure and three optional programs will be offered:
  • Enjoy a full day tour (lunch included) to Fontainebleau, built by François 1ere who was a great patron of the arts. Afterwards, drive to the splendid chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte, beautifully preserved from the period of Louis XIV and built by Nicolas Fouquet who was the finance minister under Louis XIV.
  • Alternatively, enjoy a half-day visit to Chartres whose cathedral is an unparalleled masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Enjoy a first-hand encounter with its striking decorative sculpture and remarkable stained glass windows. Malcolm Miller, the renowned conferencier of the cathedral, will take us on a private tour.
  • Those staying in Paris today are invited to meet Jill Daneels in front of the Opéra de Paris on the Place de la Bastille for a morning walking tour of the Bastille quartier.
Evening –
  • Gala Farewell Dinner, located in the French Senate’s private dining room at the Palais du Luxembourg.



September 29, Thursday
PARIS/USA
Transfer to the airport for the return flight home.
