MERIT AWARDS
Hollins has set aside merit-award funds for students who have demonstrated strong academic ability, leadership skills, outstanding community service, a special talent, or other personal strengths and accomplishments. These merit awards are based on achievement, not financial need.
Scholar Awards
- You will automatically be considered for an academic merit scholarship when you apply for admission and meet certain criteria.
- Awards begin at $5,000 and increase according to the qualifications of the applicant and the academic composition of the applicant pool. To be considered for an academic merit scholarship, students should have a minimum SAT score of 1150 (ACT 26) and GPA of 3.25.
- Awards ranging from $13,000 to $15,000 are guaranteed to students with an SAT of 1300 (ACT 29) and GPA of 3.6. The higher awards are given to the most highly qualified applicants.
- Students with an SAT of 1300 (ACT 29) and GPA of 3.6 will be considered for Batten Scholarships, which are for full tuition and feature special leadership training and activities. Batten Scholars candidates will be invited to Hollins to participate in the Batten Scholars interview weekend, held in March.
Founders Awards In addition to making awards for academic excellence, Hollins recognizes other kinds of achievement with merit awards ranging from $1,500 to $7,000. These awards go to students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who have excelled in the following kinds of activities: debate or forensics club, yearbook or newspaper, Key Club, student government, philanthropic service, community service, youth club and other similar organizational involvement, National Honor Society, National Beta Club, foreign language national honor societies, math/science honor societies, and symphonic/marching bands.
- To be eligible for a Founders Award, students should complete a Scholarship Application Form and attach a resume of extracurricular, leadership, and community service activities.
Creative Talent Awards
Hollins awards merit scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $7,000 for distinguished achievement or outstanding promise in art, photography/film, creative writing, music, dance, or theatre.
- Students who want to be considered for a merit award in music, dance, or theatre must fill out a Scholarship Application Form and participate in an on-campus audition. See instruction sheet for details.
- Those who want to be considered for merit awards in art, photography/film, and creative writing must fill out a Scholarship Application Form and submit a portfolio of three to five pieces. See instruction sheet for details.
NOTE: You will be awarded the highest merit award for which you qualify.
December 1: Deadline for application for early decision -- when you know Hollins is your first choice.
February 1: Deadline for Batten Scholars applicants (students with a minimum SAT of 1300 [ACT 29] and GPA of 3.6).
February 15: Deadline for application for admission and scholarship. Hollins will use the highest GPA, SAT, and ACT scores as of February 15 for scholarship consideration. Every award is renewable for a maximum of eight semesters, provided the student meets academic requirements.
