Endowed scholarships

Thanks to many generous donors, Hollins offers more than 150 endowed scholarship funds named in honor of alumnae and friends of the university. Following is an alphabetical list of scholarships.

To see if you qualify, submit your application for admission by February 1.

 

 

  • Louise Hyde Ale Music Scholarship: Awarded to a deserving student of the Music Department, with preference given to a student of piano, organ, or voice.
  • Alumnae Legacy Scholarship: Established by the Hollins University Alumnae Association to offer recognition and financial assistance to enrolling or enrolled students at Hollins University who are relatives of Hollins alumnae.
  • Alumnae Recognition (Referral) Scholarship: One-time $500 tuition grant established by the Hollins University Alumnae Association to every enrolled undergraduate student referred by a Hollins alumna.
  • Alice Lincoln Anderson Scholarship: Provides financial assistance to students who have demonstrated need for financial assistance.
  • Laura E. Armitage Scholarship: Awarded on the basis of intellectual ability and promise.
  • Jane Lyell Stephens Ayres Scholarship: Awarded to rising juniors and seniors who have shown special ability as writers and serious interest in publications or journalism.
  • Lelia Cocke Bagbey Scholarship: Awarded to junior history majors on the basis of intellectual ability and continuing interest in history. Preference given to students specializing in American Colonial history.
  • Pat Thomas Bain Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to deserving students enrolled or planning to enroll at Hollins.
  • Mary S. Barker Scholarship: Preference given but not restricted to students from the states of Tennessee and North Carolina.
  • Judge Alfred Dickinson Barksdale Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students with demonstrated scholastic ability; preference given to superior students who might not otherwise be able to attend Hollins.
  • Batten Scholarships: A merit-based scholarship program for students who qualify for Hollins’ most prestigious honors program, rewarding academic excellence and leadership potential as demonstrated in a competitive interview process and review of accomplishments.
  • Martha Scott Ingram Bedinger Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students with scholastic ability and demonstrated financial need.
  • Fontaine Maury Belford Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to students who have financial need with preference given to undergraduate English majors who plan to teach English Literature or pursue a related career field.
  • Claudia W. Belk International Scholarships: Provides financial assistance to students who desire to participate in Hollins Abroad or in one of Hollins’ other international study and/or service learning programs. Academic record is considered with preference given to students with financial need.
  • Berkeley Fund for Student Aid: Awarded not on the basis of a student’s scholastic record alone, but on character, general qualifications, and financial need.
  • Laura Carpenter Bingham Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students who have financial need. Preference given to students who have enterprising spirits and interests in public policy.
  • Virginia Lee Cox Blakely Scholarship: Preference is given to students from Richmond, Virginia, then other areas of Virginia, then other qualified students with financial need.
  • Betsy Richardson Boney Foreign Students Scholarship: Award based on financial need with preference given to non-United States citizens who have demonstrated both scholastic ability and concern for the needs of others.
  • Ashley Kate Bowe Riding Scholarship: Awarded to a deserving sophomore, junior or senior interested in riding who has demonstrated financial need and who, without this scholarship, would not be able to participate in the riding program at Hollins; preference given to traditional undergraduate students.
  • Guy Burkholder Scholarship: First preference given to a student enrolled both in the Batten Leadership Institute and the Hollins equestrian program; if none, then to either an equestrian student or a Batten Leadership Institute student.
  • Frances E. Bush Scholarship: Awarded without restrictions.
  • Buxton-Shaw Scholarships: Awarded to incoming first-year students who have demonstrated exemplary qualities of leadership in one or more areas, such as student government, community service, athletic endeavors, artistic accomplishment, or high school publications.
  • Ruth Camp Campbell Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to a student who is likely to positively influence the quality of life at Hollins, with preference given to residents of Virginia.
  • Nan Cooke Carpenter Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students who major in English or music. Additional preference given to students who have an interest in comparative literature.
  • Sarah Griffin Cheney Scholarship: Awarded to a student standing high in citizenship as well as scholarship, preference given to a Bedford County or Virginia student.
  • The Class of 1959 Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to students with demonstrated financial need.
  • The Class of 1966 Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who have demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need.
  • The Class of 1968 Scholarship: Awarded without restriction.
  • Cocke Family Memorial Scholarship: Awarded without restriction with special consideration given to descendants of the founding Cocke family.
  • Llewelyn Garland Cole Scholarship: Awarded without restriction.
  • Margaret Vance Cole Scholarship: Awarded to meritorious students.
  • Betsy Akers Crawford Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Dallas Alumnae Association Scholarship: First preference given to students from Dallas, then Texas, then other students.
  • Mina Hohenberg Darden Scholarship in Creativity: Awarded to students who have demonstrated an interest in creative expression and demonstrate financial need.
  • The Decker Teachers Scholarship: Awarded to a current Hollins undergraduate student who is planning to pursue a teaching career; based on demonstrated scholastic ability and proven financial need.
  • Stuart Degginger Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to Hollins students enrolled or planning to enroll in the Hollins Abroad program.
  • Mary Sue Dew Scholarship: Awarded without restriction.
  • Dorothy Quarles Dick Scholarship: Provides assistance to students based on financial need, academic record, and demonstrated leadership potential.
  • Richard Dillard Graduate Scholarship in Creative Writing: Awarded to graduate students in the M.F.A. in creative writing degree program.
  • Marthanne Dorminy Music Scholarship: Awarded to entering students who evidence outstanding ability and desire to achieve in the field of music.
  • Jessie Ball duPont Scholarship: Awarded to students with financial need; preference given, but not exclusive to, students from Virginia, Florida, and Delaware.
  • Walter Brand Elsee and Julia Stokes Elsee Scholarship: Provides recognition and assistance to undergraduate students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • John R. Everett Scholarship: Selection based on the characteristics of leadership and merit.
  • Julia Taylor Everett Scholarship: Provides financial assistance to students who demonstrate scholastic merit and financial need.
  • Frances Vaughan Exum Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who have a demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need.
  • Fredric and Nell Holloway Figge Endowed Scholarship for Study Abroad: Provides financial assistance to students who desire to participate in Hollins Abroad or in one of Hollins’ other international study and/or service learning programs. Academic record shall be considered with preference given to students with financial need.
  • Josephine D. Foley Endowed Scholarship: Provides financial assistance to deserving undergraduate students with preference given to students who participate in the Hollins riding program.
  • F. Berenice Ford Scholarship: Awarded to juniors and seniors with preference given to descendants of Hollins alumnae.
  • Elizabeth H. Foreman Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. Preference given to students from Georgia.
  • Lori J. Francis Scholarship: Provides recognition and assistance to deserving students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Sue Zirkle Frazier M.A.L.S. Endowed Scholarship: Awarded to M.A.L.S. graduate students.
  • Betty Francis Trinkle Freeman Scholarship: Awarded to students in the Horizon program.
  • Herta Freitag Mathematics Scholarship: Preference given to full-time undergraduate mathematics majors who plan to teach mathematics or to pursue a career field related to mathematics.
  • Freya Scholarship: Awarded to sophomores, juniors, or seniors with demonstrated financial need who exhibit dedication and excellence in areas compatible with the goals of Hollins as well as a personal reflection of the spirit of Hollins.
  • The Wade M. and Sandra Kirkham Gallant Scholarship Fund: Provides financial assistance to students who have demonstrated need. Preference given to full-time undergraduate psychology majors.
  • Otto and Hessie M. Goode Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated financial need. Preference given to students from East Roanoke County or Vinton, Virginia.
  • Grace-Krenson Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Frances Peace Graham Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students who demonstrate financial need and community service experience.
  • Helen I. Graham Scholarship: Awarded to students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Anne Gregory Paris Fellows Endowment: Established to provide financial assistance to students participating in the Hollins Abroad – Paris program. Academic record and/or potential as well as enthusiasm for and commitment to the study of French language and culture considered along with need.
  • Betty J. and Martin W. Halsell Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • John S. and Christine M. Hamilton Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate English majors with scholastic ability and demonstrated financial need.
  • Diane Cowden Hanshaw Scholarship: Provides financial assistance to deserving undergraduate students with preference given to students who desire to major in Studio Art or Art History.
  • Blanna Harriss Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Lucy Levis Hazlegrove Continuing Education Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students in the Horizon program.
  • William Randolph Hearst Foundation Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to Horizon students with preference given to students who intend to permanently reside in the U.S. after completion of their studies.
  • Barbara Scott Helton Scholarship: Provides financial assistance to undergraduate students based on merit or financial need; preference given to students majoring in or planning to major in chemistry or dance.
  • Nancy S. Herscher - Elizabeth Herscher Massey Scholarship: For students majoring in history or political science, awarded on the basis of merit or financial need.
  • Warren W. Hobbie Memorial Scholarship: Provides assistance to students whose record at Hollins and plans following graduation evidence a commitment to service to their communities and society. Strong preference is given to students who are active in the religious life of Hollins. Recipients must be students who are respected and esteemed by their peers.
  • Holmes-Kelley Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Mary D. Houska Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to an outstanding sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in economics or business who has demonstrated superior academic performance.
  • Charlotte Gale Hunter Scholarship: Awarded with no restrictions, but first preference given to qualified local students.
  • Sue McCutchen Jackson Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students with scholastic achievement and financial need.
  • Willie Mae Jackson Memorial Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students with scholastic ability and demonstrated financial need. Preference given to entering first-year students, with first consideration to African-Americans who attended Petersburg (Virginia) High School, then to African-American students from Virginia, then to other African-American students.
  • Patricia Ann Jenkins Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Joseph A. and Anne Hatcher Jennings Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students residing in Virginia who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Rebecca Turner Kinder Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who are currently enrolled or planning to enroll and who have demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need.
  • Martin Luther King Memorial Scholarship: Awarded with no restrictions, but preference given to African-American students.
  • Mary Antoinette Knox Scholarship: Preference given to students from South Carolina.
  • Georgie Farthing Koehler Scholarship: Awarded to students with financial need.
  • Janet Whaley Larie Scholarship: Awarded to students who demonstrate scholastic merit and financial need. Preference given to full-time undergraduate biology majors.
  • Sarah Snyder Laughon Scholarship: Awarded to undergraduate students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Frances McNulty Logan Lewis Scholarship: Awarded to undergraduate students who have demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need.
  • Cecelia Long Endowed Scholarship: Awarded to outstanding full-time undergraduate African-American women whose records of achievement in high school reveal promise for high achievement at Hollins and manifest a commitment to community service.
  • Isabella Palmer Manchester Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who have demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need. Preference given to art majors.
  • Augusta Marcus Scholarship: Awarded to students who show special ability and aptitude in music.
  • Christian S. Mass Endowed Scholarship: Awarded to full-time sophomore, junior, or senior history majors with superior academic record.
  • Dorothy C. Mayo Memorial Scholarship: Preference given to a sophomore, junior, or senior.
  • Mary Franklin Jones McCoy Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who have demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need. Preference given to music majors.
  • Oscar J. McCullough Scholarship: Awarded to an entering first-year student of exceptional vocal achievement and demonstrated music promise as a voice student who commits to major exclusively in music with an emphasis in voice performance and who is seriously committed to a career in voice performance upon completion of her studies at Hollins.
  • Courtney West Montgomery Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Moomaw-Morgan Scholarship: Preference to descendants of John and Honoria Bowman Moomaw, then to residents of Virginia.
  • Morning Star Scholarship: Provides financial assistance to students who are being raised by a single parent (through divorce, death, or never having been married) without financial support or succor from a second parent.
  • Carolyn L. Moseley Scholarship: Provides assistance to students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Myles Abroad Scholarship: Awarded to non-language majors who wish to participate in the Abroad program and have demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need. Preference given to students who couldn’t participate in the Abroad program without this scholarship and to students from small towns.
  • Frances Niederer Scholarship: Awarded to junior art history and art majors who have demonstrated scholastic ability and whose work is considered meritorious by the art faculty.
  • Lewise Shepherd Parsley Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students on the basis of both financial need and commitment to the purposes and ideals of Hollins.
  • Dora Greenlaw Peacock and Ida Greenlaw Watson Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who are currently enrolled or are planning to enroll at Hollins who have a demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need. First preference given to students from Montgomery County, Virginia.
  • Mary Patton Peacock Scholarship: Awarded exclusively to music majors.
  • Betty E. Pearson Scholarship: Awarded to undergraduate students without restrictions.
  • Bettie Wise Perrow Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated scholastic ability.
  • E. Edith Pipkin Scholarship: Awarded to a member of the rising senior class demonstrating outstanding academic achievement, good character, sound judgment and stability, and need.
  • William H. Pleasants Memorial Scholarship: Awarded without restriction.
  • Mary Ellsberg Pollard Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to international students.
  • Palmer Fishwick Posvar Scholarship: First preference given to students majoring in psychology, but may be awarded to any student in good academic standing who has financial need.
  • John Lee Pratt Scholarship: Awarded without restrictions.
  • Margaret Greene Hill Price Scholarship: Awarded on the basis of high financial need, a strong academic record, demonstrated extracurricular involvement, and leadership potential. First preference to students from North Carolina and Virginia.
  • Swannanoa Horne Priddy Scholarship: Awarded to students who demonstrate scholastic merit and financial need. First preference given to qualified students from Clayton, North Carolina, and Wichita Falls, Texas.
  • Marguerite Prinet Abroad Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who wish to pursue the study of art or art history in France as participants in the Hollins Abroad program in Paris.
  • Margaret Spencer Ragland Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who have a demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need. First preference given to students majoring in mathematics.
  • Mary Perry Ragsdale Scholarship: Awarded to undergraduate students who have demonstrated financial need and are average students and good citizens. Preference given to students from North Carolina.
  • Susan Reeve Class of 1975 Scholarship: Awarded to first-year students on the basis of overall secondary school records with emphasis on demonstrated unselfish interest in others and the capacity to enrich the quality of the lives of those around them.
  • Suzanne McKnight Reno Scholarship for International Students: Preferably awarded to outstanding international students, second preference given to first-generation American students of immigrant parents, with third preference to any other qualifying students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Pauline Gray Robinson Scholarship in Chemistry: Provides financial assistance to students who intend to major or are majoring in chemistry.
  • Gay Caskie and William T. Ross Hollins Scholars Endowment Fund: Merit scholarships awarded to full-time undergraduate students based on academic achievement.
  • Lottie Crass Sams and Walter Lee Sams Scholarship: Awarded without restrictions.
  • Ruby Lee Saunders Scholarship: Awarded to students whose records reflect high scholastic and leadership abilities. Preference is given to students from Virginia.
  • Julia Randall Sawyer Fellowship in Creative Writing: Awarded to students enrolled in M.F.A. in creative writing.
  • Rosmarie Hopler Scully Abroad Scholarship: Awarded to undergraduate students who have demonstrated financial need. Preference given to international students wanting to study at Hollins or U.S. students wanting to study abroad.
  • Allison V. Smith Scholarship Fund: Awarded without restrictions.
  • Deborah Rushton Snellings Scholarship: For a rising junior or senior majoring in history who has demonstrated financial need.
  • Mary Rowland Sowell Scholarship: Awarded without restrictions.
  • Mary Rowland Sowell Scholarship for International Study: Awarded to students participating in one of the Hollins Abroad programs, with preference given to students participating in Hollins Abroad-Paris.
  • Elizabeth Peace Stall Scholarship: Awarded on the basis of financial need, merit, or both.
  • Amy Johnson Steele Scholarship in Business: Provides recognition and financial assistance to deserving students who have demonstrated the need for financial assistance to meet their necessary college expenses and are majoring in business.
  • Louise Cornell Dechert Stetter Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Lucie P. Stone Scholarship: Awarded with preference to students interested in art and thereafter to students in the division of fine arts.
  • Kitty Clark Stroud and Martha Clark Dugan Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Switzer-Wise Abroad Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who wish to participate in Hollins Abroad-London. Preference given to students whose financial need is such that they would be unable to participate in the Abroad Program without this scholarship.
  • Walter Taussig Music Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students with preference given to students enrolled in music or having demonstrated musical talents.
  • Cornelia (Neka) Thomas Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Nancy Blue Thomas Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who have a demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need. Preference given to students from West Virginia.
  • Mary (Peggy) Macdowell Thomas Music Scholarship: Awarded to a Hollins student based on need or merit who is majoring in music and otherwise qualifying on the basis of character, disposition, adaptability and capacity for cooperation with others.
  • G. W. Tompkins Scholarship: Awarded to students from Roanoke City or Roanoke County.
  • Louise King Tower Scholarship: Designated for students who have financial need and are participating in the Hollins Abroad–London program.
  • Margaret M. Trolinger Scholarship: Preference is given first to students from Southwestern Virginia (counties of Giles, Montgomery, Floyd and Patrick, and all other counties and cities in Virginia that lie west of these counties), then to other Virginia students.
  • Joe Turner Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students with preference given to students from Roanoke City and Roanoke County.
  • Mary Masters Turner Scholarship: Awarded without restrictions.
  • Edmonia McClelland Tutwiler Scholarship: Awarded with preference given to Virginia students.
  • Mabel Chadwick Uzzell Scholarship: Designated for students with scholastic merit and financial need who demonstrate leadership potential and concern for both the environment and other people.
  • Martha Haas Valentine Scholarship: Awarded without restrictions.
  • The Walker Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students with financial need who are daughters of members of the Armed Forces of the United States, active or retired.
  • Kay Massey Weatherspoon Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who have demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need, and who have demonstrated an attitude of caring, compassion, and concern for others.
  • Richard Wetherill Memorial Scholarship: Awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, personal qualifications, and need.
  • The Wheeler Scholarship: Awarded without restrictions.
  • Mary Wood Whitehurst Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Letitia Nelson Wilkinson Scholarship: Awarded to first-year students planning to study English or creative writing who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Nancy Campbell Williamson Scholarship: Awarded to worthy students from Roanoke City and Roanoke County.
  • Rachel Wilson Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students of French.
  • Sarah Turpin Wilson Memorial Scholarship: Preference given to applicants from Mobile County, Alabama.
  • Billie Camp Younts Scholarship: Preference given to students from the Southeast United States.
