Endowed scholarships

Thanks to many generous donors, Hollins offers more than 600 endowed scholarship funds named in honor of alumnae and friends of the university.

Following is an alphabetical list of scholarships under the following categories: Need-based, merit-based, merit with need based, and unrestricted as to need or merit.

To qualify, submit your application for admission by February 1.

 

Need-based scholarships

  • Alumnae Legacy Scholarship: Established by the Hollins University Alumnae Association to offer needed financial assistance for alumnae relatives.
  • Martha Scott Bedinger '46 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students enrolled or planning to enroll at Hollins who have scholastic ability and demonstrated financial need.
  • Fontaine Maury Belford Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to students who have financial need with preference given to undergraduate English majors who plan to teach English Literature or pursue a related career field. Established in memory of Fontaine Maury Belford '62 by her family.
  • Laura Carpenter Bingham Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students who have financial need. Preference given to students who have enterprising spirits and interests in public policy. Established by an alumna in honor of Laura Carpenter Bingham, Hollins vice president for development and external relations, 1992 to 1997.
  • Virginia Lee Cox Blakely '21 Scholarship: Preference is given to students from Richmond, Virginia, then other areas of Virginia, then other qualified students with financial need. Established by the Richmond Alumnae Association as a memorial to Mrs. Blakely.
  • Betsy Richardson Boney '49 Foreign Students Scholarship: Award based on financial need with preference given to non-United States citizens who have demonstrated both scholastic ability and concern for the needs of others.
  • Nan Cooke Carpenter Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students who major in English or music. Additional preference given to students who have an interest in comparative literature. Established in honor of classmate Dr. Nan Cooke Carpenter, a noted musicologist and literary critic, by the Class of 1934 on its 55th Reunion.
  • Dallas Alumnae Association Scholarship: First preference given to students from Dallas, then Texas, then other students. Established by the Dallas Alumnae Association.
  • Mina Hohenburg Darden '59 Scholarship in Creativity Fund: Awarded to students who have demonstrated an interest in creative expression and have the need for financial assistance to meet their necessary college expenses.
  • Stuart Degginger Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to Hollins students enrolled or planning to enroll in the Hollins Abroad program. Established by alumnae and friends in memory of Professor Stuart Degginger, founder of the Hollins Abroad–Paris program.
  • Dorothy Quarles Dick '30 Scholarship: Provides assistance to students based on financial need, academic record, and demonstrated leadership potential. Mrs. Dick was founder of the Hollins Alumnae Association, an Alumnae Board President, and trustee.
  • Walter Brand Elsee and Julia Stokes Elsee '45 Scholarship: Provides recognition and assistance to undergraduate students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Elizabeth H. Foreman Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who are currently enrolled or planning to enroll at Hollins and have demonstrated financial need. Preference given to students from Georgia. Established by Alexa L. Foreman ’77 in her mother’s memory.
  • Lori J. Francis ’84 Scholarship: Provides recognition and assistance to deserving students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Sue Zirkle Frazier M.A.L.S. '81 Endowed Scholarship: Awarded to M.A.L.S. graduate students enrolled or planning to enroll at Hollins.
  • Herta Freitag Mathematics Scholarship: Preference given to full-time undergraduate mathematics majors who plan to teach mathematics or to pursue a career field related to mathematics. Dr. Freitag was professor of mathematics at Hollins for many years.
  • The Wade M. and Sandra Kirkham Gallant '54 Scholarship Fund: Provides financial assistance to students who have demonstrated need. Preference given to full-time undergraduate psychology majors. Established by Mrs. Gallant '54 in honor of her 40th Reunion.
  • Otto and Hessie M. Goode Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated financial need. Preference given to students from East Roanoke County or Vinton, Virginia.
  • Grace-Krenson Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated financial need. Established by Fred Krenson, in honor of his mother, Agnes "Aggie" Grace Crump '44, and his sister, Leonora Krenson Cornwell '76.
  • Frances Peace Graham ’36 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students who demonstrate financial need and community service experience.
  • Helen I. Graham ’31 Scholarship: Awarded to students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Anne Gregory Paris Fellows Endowment: Established by friends in memory of Anne E. Gregory ’58 to provide financial assistance to students participating in the Hollins Abroad – Paris program. Academic record and/or potential as well as enthusiasm for and commitment to the study of French language and culture considered along with need.
  • Betty J. and Martin W. Halsell Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated financial need. Established by a Hollins alumna in tribute to her parents’ belief in the value of higher education.
  • William Randolph Hearst Foundation Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to Horizon students.
  • Forest Shepperson Holmes Scholarship: Awarded to students enrolled or planning to enroll at Hollins who have demonstrated financial need. Established by Margaret H. Kelley in memory of her father.
  • Sue McCutchen Jackson '23 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students with scholastic achievement and financial need. Mrs. Jackson was a trustee and alumnae board member.
  • Willie Mae Jackson Memorial Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students with scholastic ability and demonstrated financial need. Preference given to entering first-year students, with first consideration to African-Americans who attended Petersburg (Virginia) High School, then to African-American students from Virginia, then to other African-American students.
  • Patricia Ann Jenkins '68 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Joseph A. and Anne Hatcher Jennings '53 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students residing in Virginia who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Martin Luther King Memorial Scholarship: Preference given to African-American students. Established by Hollins faculty and staff, following Dr. King's death in 1968.
  • Georgie Farthing Koehler Scholarship: Awarded to students with financial need.
  • Courtney West Montgomery '34 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Carolyn L. Moseley Scholarship: Provides assistance students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Swannanoa Horne Priddy ’11 Scholarship: Awarded to students who demonstrate scholastic merit and financial need. First preference given to qualified students from Clayton, North Carolina, and Wichita Falls, Texas.
  • Mary Perry Ragsdale '31 Scholarship: Awarded to undergraduate students who have demonstrated financial need and are average students and good citizens. Preference given to students from North Carolina.
  • Deborah Rushton Snellings '88 Scholarship: For a rising junior or senior majoring in history who has demonstrated financial need. Established in memory of Deborah Rushton Snellings '88 by her family, classmates, and friends.
  • Amy Johnson Steele '71 Scholarship in Business: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students majoring in business. Established in memory of Amy Johnson Steele '71 by family and friends.
  • Kitty Clark Stroud '58 and Martha Clark Dugan Scholarship: Awarded to students with demonstrated financial need. Given by a Hollins alumna and her mother.
  • Walter Taussig Music Scholarship: Preference given to students enrolled in music or having demonstrated musical talents. Established by Dr. Herta Freitag, professor emerita of mathematics, in honor of her brother, associate conductor of the Metropolitan Opera for more than 50 years.
  • Cornelia (Neka) Thomas ’44 Scholarship: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Louise King Tower '35 Scholarship: Designated for students who have financial need and are participating in the Hollins Abroad–London program. Mrs. Tower served on the Hollins Alumnae Board.
  • Letitia Nelson Wilkinson ’36 Scholarship: Awarded to first year students planning to study English or creative writing who have demonstrated financial need. Established by the J. Harvie Wilkinson Jr. and Letitia N. Wilkinson Charitable Trust and named for Letitia Nelson Wilkinson ’36.

merit-based scholarships

  • Laura E. Armitage (Class of 1907) Scholarship: Awarded to students on the basis of intellectual ability and promise.
  • Jane Lyell Stephens Ayres '61 Scholarship: Given to rising juniors and seniors who have shown special ability as writers and serious interest in publications or journalism.
  • Lelia Cocke Bagbey '37 Scholarship: Awarded to junior history majors on the basis of intellectual ability and continuing interest in history. Preference given to students specializing in American Colonial history.
  • Batten Scholars Endowment: Hollins' most prestigious merit scholarship program rewards academic excellence and leadership potential as demonstrated in a competitive interview process and review of accomplishments. Batten Scholars receive significant financial assistance and participate in activities as an elite group of scholars. Program endowed by Jane Parke Batten '58 and Frank Batten.
  • Sarah Griffin Cheney (Class of 1905) Scholarship: For students who demonstrate exemplary qualities of citizenship and scholastic attainment. Preference given to residents of Bedford County, Virginia, then to other students in Virginia.
  • Margaret Vance Cole '23 Scholarship: Awarded to meritorious students.
  • Martha Anne Dorminy '64 Music Scholarship: Awarded by the music faculty to entering students who evidence outstanding ability and desire to achieve in the field of music. Ms. Dorminy is an accomplished concert pianist.
  • John R. Everett Scholarship: Selection based on the characteristics of leadership and merit. Established in memory of John R. Everett, Hollins president 1950-1961.
  • Mary D. Houska Scholarship: Awarded to upperclass students majoring in economics or business who have demonstrated superior academic performance. Established by Hollins alumnae, family, and friends to honor Dr. Houska, professor of economics, on her retirement in 1995.
  • Augusta Marcus Scholarship: Awarded to students who have special ability and an aptitude for music.
  • Christian S. Mass Endowed Scholarship: Designated for sophomores, juniors, or seniors who are enrolled as history majors and have a superior academic record. Established by a Hollins alumna in honor of her father.
  • Oscar J. McCullough Voice Scholarship: Awarded to students with exceptional ability and promise as voice majors. Recipients are determined by the music faculty. Preference given to entering first-year students. Established to enrich the Vocal Music Program at Hollins in honor of Oscar J. McCullough, professor of music at Hollins from 1955 to 1992.
  • Frances Niederer Scholarship: Awarded to junior art history and art majors who have demonstrated scholastic ability and whose work is considered meritorious by the art faculty. Established by an alumna in honor of Frances Niederer, professor of art at Hollins from 1942 to 1980.
  • Mary Patton Peacock Scholarship: Awarded exclusively to music majors. Established by Dr. Markham L. Peacock Jr. in memory of his mother.
  • Bettie Wise Perrow (Class of 1890) Scholarship: Awarded to students with demonstrated scholastic ability.
  • E. Edith Pipkin '12 Scholarship: Designated for rising seniors recognized for outstanding academic achievement and good character.
  • Susan Reeve Class of 1975 Scholarship: Awarded to first-year students on the basis of overall secondary school records with emphasis on demonstrated unselfish interest in others and the capacity to enrich the quality of the lives of those around them. Established in memory of Susan V. Reeve '75 by her family, classmates, and friends.
  • Ruby Lee Saunders '20 Scholarship: Awarded to students whose records reflect superior scholastic and leadership abilities. Preference given to students from Virginia.
  • Richard Wetherill Memorial Scholarship: Awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement.

Merit with Need-based scholarsips

  • Pat Thomas Bain '49 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to deserving students enrolled or planning to enroll at Hollins. The late Mrs. Bain was a trustee and volunteer for many years.
  • Judge Alfred Dickinson Barksdale Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students enrolled or planning to enroll at Hollins with preference given to truly superior students. Established by Mary Barksdale Garbee '59, in memory of her father.
  • Berkeley Fund for Student Aid: Awarded on the basis of a student's scholastic record, character, general qualifications, and financial need. Established in memory of Sarah Bernard Manning Berkeley.
  • Class of 1966 Scholarship: Awarded to deserving students who have financial need. Established by members of the Class of 1966 in honor of their 25th Reunion.
  • Betsy Akers Crawford '70 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students who have demonstrated financial need.
  • Decker Hollins Teachers Scholarship: Awarded to undergraduate students who are planning to pursue a teaching career. Selection criteria will include a demonstrated scholastic ability and a proven financial need. Established by Mary Bernhardt Wolfe Decker ’58 and James DeWitt Decker to honor the teaching profession.
  • Julia Taylor Everett ’35 Scholarship: Awarded to students who demonstrate scholastic merit and financial need. Award can be used for transportation or room and board expenses.
  • Frances Vaughan Exum '40 Scholarship: For students enrolled or planning to enroll at Hollins who demonstrate scholastic ability and financial need.
  • Fredric and Nell Holloway Figge ’65 Endowed Scholarship for Study Abroad: Awarded to students participating in the study abroad program who have a demonstrated scholastic ability and a proven financial need. Funds are for expenses not covered by the comprehensive fee.
  • Lucy Levis Hazlegrove '79 Scholarship: Assists students enrolled in the Horizon program.
  • Rebecca Turner Kinder '28 Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to students who have scholastic ability and financial need.
  • Janet Whaley Larie ’50 Scholarship: Need-based scholarship gives preference to full-time biology majors.
  • Frances McNulty Lewis '28 Scholarship: Awarded to undergraduate students who have demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need. Established by Mrs. Lewis in honor of Paula P. Brownlee, president of Hollins from 1981 to 1990.
  • Mary Franklin Jones McCoy '37 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to outstanding students who have demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need. Preference given to students majoring in music.
  • Myles Abroad Scholarship: Awarded to students who have a desire to participate in the Hollins Abroad program and have a demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need. Preference to students who couldn’t participate in Abroad program without this scholarship. Preference also to students from small towns. Established by June B. Myles ’64 in recognition and appreciation of the additional quality the Hollins Abroad experience gave to her life.
  • Dora Greenlaw Peacock '24 and Ida Greenlaw Watson '21 Scholarship: Awarded to students who have scholastic ability and demonstrated financial need. Preference given to students from Montgomery County, Virginia.
  • Margaret Green Hill Price Scholarship: Awarded on the basis of high financial need, strong academic record, demonstrated extracurricular involvement, and leadership potential. First preference to students from North Carolina or Virginia. Given by the family of Margaret Green Hill Price, who attended Hollins from 1860 to 1861.
  • Margaret Spencer Ragland '84 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to students enrolled in computational sciences who demonstrate scholastic ability and financial need.
  • Lottie Crass Sams and Walter Lee Sams Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need.
  • Switzer-Wise Abroad Scholarship: For students who want to participate in the Hollins Abroad–London program. First preference given to students who would be unable to participate without scholarship aid. Established by an alumna, her mother, and her grandmother.
  • Nancy Blue Thomas '50 Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated scholastic ability and proven financial need. Preference given to students from West Virginia. Given in honor of Mrs. Thomas by her husband on the occasion of her retirement as a trustee.
  • Mabel Chadwick Uzzell '31 Scholarship: Designated for students with scholastic merit and financial need who demonstrate leadership potential and concern for both the environment and other people.
  • The Walker Scholarship: Awarded to students who have demonstrated scholastic ability and proven financial need. Preference given to daughters of active or retired members in the U.S. Armed Forces. Created by a gift from the parents of Helen Gail Walker Reuning '59.
  • Kay Massey Weatherspoon '54 Scholarship: Awarded to outstanding students who have demonstrated scholastic ability, financial need, and an attitude of caring, compassion, and concern for others. Mrs. Weatherspoon is a Hollins trustee.

SCHOLARSHIPS Unrestricted as to need or merit

  • Louise Hyde Ale '30 Music Scholarship: For students with a study emphasis in piano, organ, or voice. Recipients selected by the music faculty.
  • Mary S. Barker Scholarship: First preference given to students from Tennessee and North Carolina.
  • Frances E. Bush ’29 Scholarship: Unrestricted scholarship
  • Buxton, Shaw, Cornelson, & Halsey Leadership Fund: Awarded to deserving students who have demonstrated excemplary leadership qualities in one or more areas: student government, volunteer or community service, athletic endeavors, artistic accomplishment, or high school publications. Recipients must be committed to continued development and expansion of their leadership skills. Established in recognition of four generations in one family who attended Hollins.
  • Ruth Camp Campbell '15 Memorial Scholarship: For students who in all likelihood will influence the quality of life at Hollins in a positive way. Preference given to Virginia residents.
  • Class of 1968 Scholarship: Established by the Class of 1968 as part of its senior gift.
  • Cocke Family Memorial Scholarship: Awarded without restriction with special consideration given to descendants of the founding Cocke family. Established by the Cocke family in memory of the many family members who dedicated themselves to Hollins.
  • Llewellyn Garland Cole '12 Scholarship: Provides recognition and financial assistance to deserving students based on financial need or merit.
  • Mary Sue Dew (Class of 1899) Scholarship: Unrestricted scholarship.
  • Jessie Ball duPont Scholarship: Established by Mrs. Jessie Ball duPont who was awarded a Hollins honorary degree and the prestigious Hollins Medal. Preference given to students from Virginia, Florida, and Delaware but not restricted to these states.
  • F. Bernice Ford '15 Scholarship: Awarded to juniors or seniors with preference given to descendants of Hollins alumnae.
  • Betty Trinkle Freeman Scholarship: Preference given to Horizon students.
  • Freya Scholarship: Awarded for one year only to a sophomore, junior, or senior who most nearly reflects "the spirit of Hollins." Established by the members of Freya, a student service organization founded in 1903.
  • Barbara “Tita” Scott Helton ’51 Scholarship: Preference given to students majoring in or planning to major in chemistry or dance. Awards based on merit or financial need.
  • Nancy S. Herscher '47 Scholarship: For students majoring in history or political science.
  • Warren W. Hobbie Memorial Scholarship: Established by trustees of the Warren W. Hobbie Trust to assist students whose record at Hollins and plans following graduation evidence a strong commitment to service to their communities and society. Preference given to students active in religious life at Hollins, and recipients must be respected and esteemed by their peers.
  • Charlotte Gale Hunter Scholarship: Preference given to qualified Roanoke area students.
  • Mary Antoinette Knox Scholarship: Awarded to undergraduate students with preference given to South Carolina residents. Established in memory of Mary Antoinette Knox, a Hollins employee from 1930 to 1943, by her family.
  • Cecelia M. Long ’70 Endowed Scholarship: Awarded to outstanding African-American women whose records of community service and achievement in high school reveal promise for high achievement at Hollins. Ms. Long served as an Alumnae Board member and as a trustee.
  • Isabella P. Manchester '53 Scholarship: Preference for students majoring in art.
  • Dorothy C. Mayo '15 Memorial Scholarship: Preference given to sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
  • The Moomaw-Morgan Scholarship: Awarded to undergraduate students with preference given to John C. and Honoria Bowman Moomaw first, then to Virginia residents.
  • Lewise Shepherd Parsley '25 Scholarship: Awarded to students who exhibit a commitment to the purposes and ideals of Hollins.
  • Betty Evans Pearson ’62 Scholarship: Unrestricted scholarship.
  • William H. Pleasants Memorial Scholarship: Unrestricted scholarship established through a bequest from Mary M. Pleasants, Class of 1870 and faculty member between 1873 and 1916, in memory of her father, William H. Pleasants, Latin professor at Hollins from 1852 to 1914.
  • Mary Ellsberg Pollard '43 Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to international students.
  • John Lee Pratt Scholarship: Unrestricted scholarship.
  • Mary Rowland Sowell '28 Scholarship: Unrestricted scholarship.
  • Mary Rowland Sowell '28 Scholarship for International Study: For students participating in one of the Hollins Abroad Programs with preference given to students in the Paris program.
  • Lucie P. Stone Scholarship: Awarded to students interested in art. Established through a bequest from Lucie P. Stone, an art instructor at Hollins from 1899 to 1913.
  • G. W. Tompkins Scholarship: For students who reside in Roanoke City or Roanoke County, Virginia.
  • Margaret M. Trolinger (Class of 1907) Scholarship: Preference given first to students from southwestern Virginia, then to other Virginia residents.
  • Joe Turner Scholarship of the Rotary Club of Roanoke: Preference given to students who reside in Roanoke City and Roanoke County, Virginia. Established by the Roanoke Rotary Club in honor of Joe Turner, business manager at Hollins, 1901 to 1937.
  • Mary Masters Turner (Class of 1903) Scholarship: Unrestricted scholarship.
  • Edmonia McClelland Tutwiler Scholarship: Preference given to Virginia residents. Established through a bequest from Argyle Tutwiler, Class of 1882, in memory of her mother.
  • Martha Haas Valentine '69 Scholarship: Unrestricted award.
  • The Wheeler Scholarship: Unrestricted scholarship honors former Professor and Mrs. John "Jake" P. Wheeler, Jr.
  • Nancy Campbell Williamson Scholarship: Awarded to students enrolled or planning to enroll at Hollins. Preference given to students residing in Roanoke City and Roanoke County, Virginia.
  • Rachel Wilson '12 Scholarship: Preference given to French majors. Established to honor Rachel Wilson, who, within one year of graduation, returned to Hollins as professor of French and remained until her retirement in 1958.
  • Sarah Turpin Wilson (Class of 1875) Memorial Scholarship: Preference given to residents from Mobile County, Alabama.
  • Willie Camp Younts '16 Scholarship: Preference given to students from the Southeast United States.
