Five students from Hollins will participate in the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges’ 13th annual statewide collegiate Wells Fargo Ethics Bowl on February 12-13, 2012, on the campus of Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. The Hollins University team will compete head-to-head against other highly qualified student teams from Virginia's 14 leading independent colleges and universities, debating a variety of case studies highlighting campus-based dilemmas. The Hollins University student team members are: Morgan Conroy '12; Jessica Hall '12; Jennifer Hau '12; Rachel O’Connell '14; and Bethny Barrett '15. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 23: Lauren Morris '15 of the basketball team. This past week the team went 2-0 in ODAC play and currently sits in sixth place in the 11-team league. In a a 91-83 win over Emory and Henry, Lauren scored 21 points to go with 10 rebounds, one assist, one block, and two steals. On Saturday, she helped Hollins to a 72-59 win at Randolph College. Her 18 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks paced Hollins to a 6-7 record in the ODAC. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 16: Sage Otto '13 of the swim team. During that week, Hollins went 1-1 in a pair of ODAC meets. In a loss to Sweet Briar, Sage finished third in the 100 Backstroke. At Emory & Henry, she contributed to an easy 136-72 road victory when she won the 100 Freestyle and earned second place points in the 200 Individual Medley. As part of the 400 Freestyle Relay team, she helped establish yet another Hollins varsity record against the Wasps. Hollins is currently 7-4 on the season. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 9: Audrey James '15 of the swim team. In a meet against Bridgewater College and Ferrum College, Audrey earned three second-place finishes against Bridgewater and three firsts against the Panthers. Her time in the 200-Meter Freestyle established a new Hollins varsity record. However, Audrey knew that Maggie Dwyer '14 had a shot at the same record later in the meet. She supported Maggie the entire meet and was the one cheering the loudest when Maggie broke her hour-old record. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 2: Jasmine Greene '13 of the basketball team. Boasting a 3-1 ODAC record, the team came back from winter break last week to play three conference games, including a loss to Guilford College, another defeat on a last-second shot to Bridgewater College, and an upset victory at Lynchburg College. For the week Jasmine scored 62 points to go with 19 rebounds, 17 assists, and eight steals. She currently leads the ODAC in scoring and assists while ranking second in steals. With 26 points against Bridgewater, Jasmine became just the 10th Hollins player to surpass the 1,000-point mark in her career. With a season and a half remaining, Jasmine is on pace to become the all-time leading scorer in Hollins basketball history. |
| Dan A. R. Kelly, who is currently pursuing his M.F.A. in screenwriting and film studies at Hollins, has been hired by Susie’s Hope Movie, LLC, as the screenwriter for the true story of Susie, the dog who was beaten and burned but survived to inspire the state of North Carolina to create new laws preventing animal cruelty. Proceeds from the film will benefit non-profit work in animal cruelty prevention and education. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 28: Maggie Dwyer '14 of the swim team. The team traveled to Sweet Briar for a tri-meet with the Vixens and Ferrum College. Hollins came away with a split and takes a 5-2 record into winter break. Maggie won two individual events and swam a leg on the winning relay team. She captured the 400-Meter Freestyle event after setting a varsity record in winning the 800-Meter Freestyle, and won both events by half a pool-length over her nearest competitor. Maggie then helped to set a varsity record when Hollins won the 200-Meter Freestyle Relay. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for November 21: Molly Tahmaseb '14 of the basketball team. On November 22, Hollins hosted Emory & Henry College in their ODAC opener and came away with a 74-62 victory. With the win, Hollins went into the break tied atop the ODAC standings. Tahamaseb, a Greensboro, North Carolina native, scored a game and career-high 18 points to go with her three rebounds and two steals. She also hit 12 of 15 free-throw attempts. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 14: Jasmine Greene '13 of the basketball team. Hollins opened the 2011-12 basketball season with three games, all of which they lost in heartbreaking fashion, coming up four points short in each contest. Greene put up numbers that validated her All-ODAC selection a season ago. For the week, the Hampton, VA native averaged 18.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per outing. She also led the team with 15 assists and 10 steals. For her efforts in the McDaniel College Tip-Off Tournament, Greene was named to the All-Tournament Team. |
| Music major Helena Brown '12 and Associate Professor of English T.J. Anderson are among the cast of "Miss Lucy," a folk opera based on the life of Roanoke education pioneer Lucy Addison that will be staged Thursday and Friday, Nov. 17 & 18, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. All performances will be in the June M. McBroom Theater at Community High School, 302 Campbell Ave SE. The Roanoke Times' Mike Allen wrote about "Miss Lucy" in his Arts & Extras column last weekend. |
| Sarah Brown '13 captured second in Novice Equitation on the Flat and Blair St. Ledger-Olson '13 took second in Intermediate Equitation over Fences at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) event at Sweet Briar College on November 12. The Hollins riding team finished eighth overall in the competition and is currently fourth in the IHSA Zone 4 Region 2 standings. The team’s next IHSA event will take place in February 2012. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for October 31: Meg O'Brien '15 of the Hollins swim team. In a meet against VMI, Meg brought home points in three different events in Hollins' effort to upset the Division I Keydets. Against Ferrum, she collected first-place points in three different events to help lead Hollins to an easy home victory. Meg won the 200 Individual Medley by almost 10 seconds. Hollins' overall record is now 3-1. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for October 24: Maggie Dwyer '14 of the Hollins swim team. On October 29, the Hollins swim team hosted a tri-meet with Gallaudet University and Greensboro College. Hollins defeated both opponents to go 2-0 on the season. Maggie won two individual events, the 200 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly, and was a member of the winning 200 Freestyle relay team. She already has six wins in a season that has just gotten under way. The event also featured men's competition between Gallaudet and Greensboro. Maggie's time in the 100 Butterfly would have earned her first-place points in the men's meet as well. |
| The Hollins riding team earned fifth place at the Bridgewater College IHSA Horse Show, held October 29 at the Bridgewater Equestrian Center in Weyers Cave, Va. Leading the team were Blair St. Ledger-Olson '13 (2nd, Intermediate on the Flat, and 3rd, Intermediate Equitation Over Fences); Emma Lane Poole '13 (6th, Open Equitation on the Flat); Catherine Hensly '14 (4th, Novice Equitation on the Flat); and Sarah Landauer '14 (1st, Walk Trot Equitation). Sweet Briar College and Bridgewater College were Champion and Reserve Champion, respectively, of this year’s event. James Madison University and Washington & Lee University finished tied for third, while Lynchburg College captured fourth and the University of Virginia took sixth. |
| The Hollins paddling team overcame rain and sub 40-degree temperatures to defeat Sweet Briar College in the American Canoe Association (ACA) Collegiate Race Series Virginia Championship, held October 29 on the Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg. The paddlers competed in three classes, OC1, K1 and OC2. Carmella Glazier '15 took the OC1 title with a time of 11 minutes, 34 seconds, while Tina DelPup '12 and Mia McDonald '12 won in OC2 competition by clocking in at 11 minutes, nine seconds, which was also the fastest time of the day. The closest race of the day came in the K1 class, where Madeleine Regan '12 edged Sweet Briar’s Syndney Fuller by just one second to win the class title with a time of 11 minutes, 12 seconds. Also representing Hollins at the event were Jessica Sheperd '14, Brittany Gardner '14, Jentry Campbell '15, and Sadie Giles. |
| Student Athletes of the Week for October 17: Hollins Soccer Seniors - Ashley Cassidy, Kristen Norkus, Erica Smith, and Mary Wells. The seniors led the soccer team to two Old Dominion Athletic Conference victories last week. After picking up a 3-1 win at Sweet Briar last Saturday, the team hosted Randolph College on Tuesday and won a close 1-0 contest over the WildCats. This success sets the stage for the season-ending game against Eastern Mennonite; a victory would give Hollins three ODAC wins in a row for the first time. The win over Sweet Briar was the fourth straight against the Vixens for this quartet of seniors, giving them an undefeated record against their biggest ODAC rival. |
| Sarah Jarosinski ’12 and Emma Lane Poole ’13 delivered standout performances at the Randolph College Fall Festival Horse Show, held October 22-23. In the three phases of the Oak Ridge Medal Finals, Jarosinski placed third in gymnastics, third in over fences, and second place overall, while Poole finished seventh in gymnastics, second in the flat phase, eighth in over fences, and eighth overall. Riding Tres Coronas, Jarosinski took second in the .95 jumpers category. Poole, atop her own horse James Dean, finished second in the .85 jumpers category and captured first in the Southwest Virginia Hunter/Jumper Association Adult Medal competition. |

The libero/defensive specialist from Peoria, Arizona, helped lead Hollins to a big ODAC victory over Virginia Wesleyan College. In the win, Morgan recorded 32 digs, a Hollins varsity record. Currently, she is third in the ODAC in digs per game. |
| Hollins equestrians Blair St. Ledger-Olson '13, Michele Agopian '12, and Emma Lane Poole '13 earned honors at the House Mountain Horse Show, held October 15-16 at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington. Riding "Just One Look," St. Ledger-Olson was Champion Low Hunter (1st and 2nd, Low Hunter Over Fences) and Champion Adult Hunter (1st and 5th, Adult Hunter Over Fences). Agopian rode "Piece of the Rock" to capture Reserve Champion Adult Hunter (4th, Low Hunter Over Fences, 4th, Low Hunter Under Saddle, and 1st, Adult Hunter Over Fences). Atop "James Dean," Poole took 2nd in Adult Hunter Over Fences. Poole and St. Ledger-Olson finished first and second, respectively, in the Southwest Virginia Hunter/Jumper Adult Medal competition. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for October 3: Trudy Siziba '12 of the tennis team. Trudy was a standout performer during the Hollins tennis team's final event of the fall, the ODAC Fall Individual Tennis Championships. During the two-day event hosted by Randolph Macon College, Hollins players reached six of the 11 finals competitions and Trudy was the lone Hollins winner, defeating her opponent from Sweet Briar by a score of 7-5, 6-2 to capture the Flight 7 Singles Final. Trudy also teamed with Caitlin Hoerr '13 to reach the final match in Flight 4 Doubles where they fell to a team from Sweet Briar in a tightly contested 8-6 match. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for September 19: Coty Hudson '15 of the Hollins University golf team. The team played their second event of the fall Sept. 24-25 when they hosted Radford University at Ashley Plantation in Daleville. Shooting a 79, Hudson placed third, just one shot out of the runner-up spot; the performance was the Lynchburg native's second consecutive top five finish. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for September 12: Elizabeth Cheng '14 of the golf team. Last weekend the Hollins golf team joined eight other teams and 56 golfers in competition at the Sixth Annual Piedmont Invitational, one of the South's top tournaments. Elizabeth finished in a tie for third place at the two-day event with a score of 156, just four shots behind the tournament winner. She helped lead Hollins to a sixth-place finish for the weekend. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for September 5: Mandi McDade '15 of the volleyball team. McDade, a 6'0" middle blocker from Eustis, FL, helped lead Hollins to a 3-1 record this week. After an early week loss at Averett, Hollins came home to win three matches, all sweeps, in less than 24 hours. Mandi recorded 37 kills, one assist, 12 service aces, five total blocks and 40 digs. Her effort earned McDade a spot on the ODAC Weekly Honor Roll for Volleyball. Included in her kills was the first double-digit kill match of her young Hollins career, 15 against Mary Baldwin. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for August 29: Ally Reed '13 of the volleyball team. The Hollins volleyball team opened their season last weekend with a trip to the Virginia Beach area for five matches. After a match at Christopher Newport, Hollins played four matches in the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational. Ally Reed from Sterling, VA, led the way for Hollins. For the weekend, Reed posted team highs in kills (40), digs (67), and service aces (9). |
| Elizabeth Cheng '14, a member of the Hollins golf team, has been named to the 2010-11 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar Team for Division III. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50. Cheng is the only golfer from a Division III college or university in Virginia to be named to the All-American Scholar Team this year. |
| Yafen Liang '12 has received a $5,000 award from the HSBC First Opportunity Partners Scholarship Program. This initiative is intended to broaden access and improve rates of success for first generation, minority, and new American students with financial need. |

| Mezzo-soprano, Helena Brown '12, has been accepted into and will be attending the Lied Austria International vocal workshop this summer in Graz, Austria. Helena will be studying German Lieder with Wolfgang Lockeman, noted authority on the German art song repertoire and its poetry. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 3: Lacie Forrest '13 of the basketball team. The basketball team opened the new year with three ODAC games. In the January 8th game against Lynchburg, Forrest came off the bench to score a game high 14 points, including 10 in the first half. For the week Lacie averaged 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 29: Claire Caprio '14 of the swim team. On December 2, Claire and the swim team traveled to Lexington to face VMI, an NCAA DI swim program. Caprio won both of the individual events in which she was entered. Claire won the 100 Freestyle by beating the VMI swimmer by .06 seconds and then went on to win the 200 Freestyle later in the meet. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 15: Carrie Cox '14 of the basketball team. In the home opener on November 19, Hollins staged a double-digit comeback to defeat NAIA's Alice Lloyd 72-70. Carrie came off the bench to spark a Hollins run. The Lynch Station native hit four of the five shots she took en route to nine huge points for the home squad. The win helped Hollins get off to a 2-1 start on the young season. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 1: Ceseli Slovacek '14 of the golf team. Ceseli and her teammates competed at the Richmond Lady Spider Invitational, Nov. 1 - 2. Hollins was the only non-Division I school in the 10-team field. In her third round, Slovacek shot an 81 to best each of her playing partners from Towson and Rutgers. Ceseli helped lead Hollins to defeat Seton Hall during the event. |
| Hollins riders took first, third, and fourth place in medal competition along with Grand Champion and Reserve Champion titles during the Southwest Virginia Hunter/Jumper Association (SWVH/JA) Finals, held at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, November 5-7. Sarah Jarosinski '12 won the gold, Meredith McDonnell '12 captured the bronze, and Kristina Sprenkle '13 finished fourth in the SWVH/JA Adult Medal Finals. Sprenkle won the championship in the Adult Hunter Division and was Grand Champion for the Children/Adult Hunter Divisions. Arden Cone '12 was Reserve Champion (runner up) in the Adult Amateur Division, while Emma Lane Poole '13 was Reserve Champion in the Open Hunter Division. | Student Athlete of the Week for October 18: India Richey '14 of the volleyball team. Last week in three matches, Richey recorded 13 kills, 85 assists, 21 digs, and six service aces. In a five-set match against Randolph College, India recorded a triple-double when she had 10 kills, 39 assists, and 14 digs. India is currently leading the team in assists with 355 and second on the team with 36 service aces. |

In a home match against Randolph College, Reed recorded a match high in kills (12), digs (23), and service aces (5). The very next night when Hollins hosted Mary Baldwin, Ally again led the way with 12 kills and 15 digs. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for September 27: Dani Franklin '14, a first-year midfielder on the soccer team from Chesapeake Beach, Md. In a thrilling 1-0 ODAC win over visiting Emory & Henry, Dani was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick late in the contest. Franklin beat the Wasp keeper for her first game-winning goal of the season and led the team to a critical conference win. Dani currently leads the team with five goals and 10 points. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for September 13: Nicole Hemmis '14, a first-year golfer from Suffolk, VA. Last weekend the golf team competed at the Piedmont Fall Invitational in Clarksville, GA. The tournament consisted of 12 teams and 63 golfers. In her first college event, Nicole came in sixth place and helped to lead the team to a third-place finish - including an eight-stroke advantage over host Piedmont College. |
| Cross-country runners Amie Fleming-Haddock '13 and Melissa Hammond '12 completed the Blue Ridge Marathon in Roanoke on April 24. Amie was the 26th woman to cross the line and Melissa was the 40th. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for April 19: the golf team, who won the Gettysburg Invitational on April 17-18. Leading the team was sophomore J.R. Woolwine with a two-day total of 170. J.R. also placed 3rd overall as an individual. The team competed against seven other teams. Hollins won by a margin of 15 shots over Gettysburg. After the 1st round Hollins scored 371, which is the lowest score of the season for a round for Hollins. |
| The Hollins University riding team captured the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship at the equestrian finals on Friday, April 9. All four team members - Katie Furches '10, Emma Lane Poole '13, Meredith McDonnell '12, and Kristina Sprenkle '13 - were named All-ODAC; Furches was honored as ODAC Rider of the Year and Coach Sandy Gerald was named ODAC Coach of the Year. On Sunday, April 11, Hollins qualified to complete at the National IHSA Horse Show in Lexington, Ky., May 4-9, as Reserve Champions at the Zone Horse Show. Hollins finished second to Virginia Intermont, 47-43. | Congrats to Chad Handley and Ryan Neighbors, students in Hollins' M.F.A. program in screenwriting & film studies, on their great showing in the Acclaim Film & TV Script Contest. Chad won first prize and $500 in the Spec Script Category (for a show already in existence) for his "30 Rock" script, "Never Go Back." Ryan was a finalist in the same category for "Speed," a script for "The Office." |
| Amy Clayton, a student in the children’s literature graduate program, has an essay published in the current issue of the online, peer-reviewed journal Red Feather: An International Journal of Children's Culture. Her essay is titled "The Future of Feminism is Slayed: Tomboyism in Joss Whedon's Fray," and it is based on the final research paper that she wrote last summer for Assistant Professor of English Michelle Abate’s course on tomboyism in children's literature. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 18: Sage Otto '13, a member of the Hollins swim team. During last weekend's meet with Salem College and Gallaudet University, the team needed a distance swimmer. Sage, who normally swims sprints, unselfishly stepped up and competed in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. In the 1000, Sage finished first against Salem and second against Gallaudet. In the 500, she trailed the pack by as much as 20 yards before making a huge push in the last 150 yards of the race to finish second against both schools. Despite an already physically grueling meet, Sage went on to swim in the 200 Freestyle Relay. She paced Hollins to a first-place finish with her personal-best time during her leg of the relay. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for December 7: Kate Teiken '12, from Hershey, Pa. Kate was instrumental in helping the Hollins swim team earn victories over Salem and Emory & Henry in a quad meet at Sweet Briar last weekend. She finished first in six of the eight events in which she competed. Kate is majoring in art history with a double minor in business and studio art. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 30: Jasmine Greene '13 from Hampton, Va. Jasmine has made an immediate impact on the basketball team this season. On November 20, she tallied 22 points, six rebounds and six steals in a game against Mary Baldwin College. Currently, she is leading the ODAC in scoring and assists. |
| Student Athletes of the Week for November 16: the Hollins basketball team. On November 15, Hollins beat Gallaudet 78-74 to snap a 63-game losing streak. In the first half Hollins was led by Tamara Phillips '11, who hit five three-pointers to help keep the score close. In the second half, Jasmine Greene '13 paced the team and ended the game with a team-high 31 points. Kendra McCain '13 scored nine points and had eight rebounds, while Brittany Hanavan '13 and Lacie Forrest '13 also made significant contributions to the victory. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 2 is Sarah Jarosinski '12. This past weekend Sarah placed first in the Novice Equitation Over Fences at both the Bridgewater and UVa IHSA Horse Shows. Her performance at both events earned Sarah Reserve Champion High Point Team designation at each show. Sarah is a sophomore from Powhatan, Virginia. She is majoring in biology with a minor is chemistry. |
| Dahlia Butler, current M.F.A. student in dance and Javits Fellow, had her work received for next year's Venice Biennale.
Bruce Wong, current M.F.A. student and Hong Kong Jockey Club Dance Award recipient, has been nominated for the Rolex mentorship in the arts. |
