The Hollins Ethics Bowl team competed in the VFIC statewide Ethics Bowl competition February 10-11, 2013 at Randolph College in Lynchburg, VA. This year's theme was "Ethics & Social Media," and the team consisted of Carrie Boswell '14, Megan Grosholz '14, Safiya Kelly '14, Amanda Stowell (Horizon), and Naomi Ruth Thompson '14. The Hollins team delivered a strong showing during competition, defeating Roanoke College and enjoying very close matches with the other participating colleges and universities. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 21: Lacie Forrest '13 of the basketball team. This past week the team went 1-1. After a home loss to Lynchburg, Hollins picked up their first ODAC road win of the season when they went to Randolph and came home with a 71-67 victory. Lacie, a senior guard from Richmond, VA, scored 18 points in the win over the WildCats. In addition to going four-for-four from the free throw line, Lacie added five rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes of play. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 7: Jasmine Greene '13 of the basketball team. This past week the Hollins basketball team went 2-1 including a 10-point win over Washington and Lee, their first ODAC win of the season. In a win over Hood College, Jasmine became the all-time Hollins steals leader. Two nights later, she surpassed Brandi Cochran as Hollins all-time leading scorer. Jasmine currently holds the career Hollins basketball record for points, assists, and steals. For the week, she averaged 25 points, seven rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 3.3 steals. For her efforts Jasmine was named ODAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week, her second such honor this season. |
Kaitlin Heath '13, Maria Latiolais '13, and Russell Wilson '15 have been nominated to compete for the national Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships, which provide recognition, honor, and financial assistance to outstanding student performers wishing to pursue further education. Approximately 400 students vie for this prestigious acting award. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for December 31: Chanci Wright '14 of the basketball team. During that week the Hollins basketball team played three times, their first three games of the new semester. For the week Chanci averaged 11 points and 9.33 rebounds per game. The 6'0" junior from Eden, Texas, made 14 of her 16 field goal attempts. Her nine-for-nine performance against Meredith set a Hollins single-game record for field goal percentage, breaking the old record of eight-for-eight. Chanci currently ranks third in the ODAC with 9.2 rebounds per game while leading the conference with her 57.7% shooting percentage. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for December 3: Catie Aslip '16 of the swim team. On December 4th, Catie made Hollins history in a loss at NCAA Division I opponent VMI. For the first time in school history, a Hollins swimmer scored diving points when Catie came in second in the One Meter Dive event. She also secured third-place points in the 100 Butterfly during the meet. Upon checking with the league office, it appears Catie is the first "diver" in the history of the ODAC, formed in 1983, to score points in an NCAA meet. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 26: Jasmine Greene '13 of the basketball team. This past week the team competed in a pair of ODAC games against Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon. Jasmine, a senior from Hampton, VA, entered those games as fifth among Hollins career scorers. After scoring 17 in a home game against the Eagles, Jasmine was just one point from moving into second on the all-time scoring list. After a 13-point effort against the Yellow Jackets, Jasmine moved to within one spot of becoming the all-time leading scorer in Hollins basketball history. With 1,352 points during her career, Jasmine needs just 128 points during her next 20 games to match the total set by Brandi Cochran (2001-05). |

| Student Athlete of the Week for November 19: Britney Campbell '15 of the basketball team. The team cruised to an easy 66-26 win at Mary Baldwin for their first victory of the season, and Britney tallied eight points as 11 of the 12 Hollins players who played in the game scored. In just 16 minutes of play, Britney was a perfect three-for-three from the field while grabbing six rebounds and recording a pair of steals. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for October 29: Grace Iaquinto '15 of the swim team. This past week Hollins went 1-1 in a pair of meets. A 115-78 victory at Ferrum followed by a tough 99-156 loss against Emory & Henry. In the win over Ferrum, Hollins third straight win, Iaqunito brought home first-place points in the 100 Breaststroke. She then captured a runner-up finish in the 200 Individual Medley. Against the Wasps, Grace added to her top three finishes by bringing home a third in the 100 Breaststroke and as a member of the 400 Medley Relay team that finished second. |
| The Hollins downriver racing team captured first place at the American Canoe Association (ACA) Collegiate Race Series Virginia Championships, held October 13-14 on the Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg. | Senior environmental studies majors Mya Jackson, Sage Otto, Macy Carman, Brit Gardner, Brit Hanavan, Jessie Sheperd, and Blair St. Ledger Olson won the Environmental Poster Contest at the Green Living and Energy Expo in Roanoke on November 2 - 3. Their poster was awarded first place, ahead of many other posters submitted by students at Virginia Tech, Lynchburg College, and Ferrum College. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for October 22: Maggie Dwyer '14 of the Hollins swim team. On October 27 the swim team competed in their home pool for the first time when they hosted a tri-meet with Gallaudet University and Greensboro College. Hollins defeated both opponents by besting Gallaudet 62-33 and Greensboro 48-47. Maggie, a junior from Norwich, Vermont, won three events during the 11-race meet. After winning the first individual race of the meet, the 1000 Freestyle, she won the 200 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle. Maggie accounted for three of the five individual wins during the event. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for October 15: Meg O'Brien '15 of the swm team. The swim team faced off against ODAC competition at the ODAC Relays hosted by Washington and Lee University in Lexington on October 20. Hollins finished sixth out of nine teams in the one-day event that featured 10 different relay races. Meg competed in five different events during the meet. In four of her five events, she posted times that set Hollins records for her leg of the event. Meg set Hollins-best times in her legs of the 150 Butterfly, 150 Backstroke, 300 IM, and 100 IM. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for October 8: Elizabeth Cheng '14 of the golf team. On October 13 and 14 the golf team faced their toughest test of the fall when they traveled to Ohio to take part in the Pat Clouse Invitational. Hosted by Wittenburg University, the event featured 15 teams and 91 golfers. Elizabeth finished in a tie for third in the highly competitive tournament. On the second day of play, which began with a windy and cold morning that led to difficult playing conditions, she shot the second-best round of the day, helping Hollins to a ninth-place finish. For the fourth time this season, Elizabeth has been honored as the ODAC Women's Golfer of the Week. She and her Hollins teammates bested every other ODAC golf team in all four events this fall. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for September 24: Ally Reed '13 of the volleyball team. The team went 2-2 at the Roanoke College Tournament. Hollins knocked off UVa-Wise in the opener before falling to Averett. On day two, Hollins won a five-set affair against Ferrum and then fell to Randolph in their tournament finale. During the four matches, Ally recorded 42 kills, four service aces, and 62 digs. The senior captain led Hollins in kills and digs during the tournament and was rewarded for her solid weekend by being named to the All Tournament Team. |
| The riding team captured third place in the Randolph College and Lynchburg College Intercollegiate Horse Show, held October 5. Lynchburg won the seven-team competition with 33 points, followed by Bridgewater (34) and Hollins (33). Other schools participating were Sweet Briar (31), Randolph (30), University of Virginia (27), and James Madison (25). | Student Athlete of the Week for September 17: Becca Logan '14 of the soccer team. Last week, Hollins defeated Eastern Mennonite 9-2 to pick up their first ODAC win of the season, and with the game tied 2-2, Becca scored the first of her four goals and what proved to be the game-winner. Earlier in the week, she scored once in a heartbreaking overtime loss to Emory & Henry, giving her five goals for the week. For her efforts, Logan was named the ODAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for September 10: Elizabeth Cheng '14 of the golf team. On September 15 & 16, the Hollins golf team opened their 2012-13 season by hosting and winning the Hollins Invitational. Hollins won the event by 28 strokes over Sewanee. Cheng shot an opening round 79 and followed it up with a second round 76. Her 155 was just two shots behind the individual tournament winner. For her effort, the junior from Virginia Beach made ODAC history by being named the first-ever ODAC Women's Golfer of the Week. During Hollins' 6-0 road victory over Trinity College, the team's first of the season, O'Neill not only scored her first goal in a Hollins uniform, she netted a hat trick, scoring three of the team's six goals. |

The Classical Outlook publishes original poems in English on classical themes, verse transations from Greek and Roman authors, and original Latin and Greek poems. | Sarah Brown '13 and Catherine Hensly '14 each won national titles at the 2012 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championships at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh, North Carolina, May 3 - 6. Brown topped riders from the University of Colorado, Penn State, Cornell University, Boston University, and the University of Connecticut to win the Intermediate Equitation Over Fences (Individual) competition. Her victory represents the first time a Hollins rider has won a national title in this class. Hensly, who hails from Virginia Beach, won the Walk Trot Canter Equitation (Individual) competition, defeating riders from Penn State, Miami University, Colgate University, the University of Georgia, Virginia Tech, and Xavier University. Emma Lane Poole '13 also delivered a standout performance, taking third place in Open Equitation Over Fences. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for April 9: Chanci Wright '14 of the lacrosse team. Hollins finished their home schedule last week with a game against Sweet Briar. Chanci, finishing her first-ever season of lacrosse, lead the team with two draw controls, six caused turnovers, and seven ground balls. Currently, she is ranked first in the ODAC with 42 caused turnovers and fourth in the league with 48 ground balls. Chanci's 42 caused turnovers and her 3.0 caused turnovers per game are both second in the nation in NCAA women's lacrosse. |

| Two Hollins students have been honored by the Virginia Press Association (VPA) for work published in the Hollins Columns student newspaper. Taylor Cannon '13 and Lindley Taylor '13 received awards from the VPA’s College Newspaper Contest. Cannon, one of the Columns’ co-editors-in-chief last fall, earned second place in the category of editorial writing. Taylor, who last year regularly submitted illustrations and editorial cartoons to the Columns, won third place in the illustration category. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for April 9: Shawnte Woodson '12 of the tennis team. On April 13 and 14 the Hollins tennis team finished their regular season by going 2-0 against ODAC competition. Shawnte, playing for the final time in the regular season, was undefeated at #4 singles and #2 doubles. The senior from Waynesboro, VA is 14-1 in singles play this season. She is 2-0 at #2 singles, 5-1 at #3 singles, 7-0 at #4 singles, and boasts an ODAC record of 8-1. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for April 2: Gabby Rader '14 of the golf team. The golf team competed at the Piedmont Spring Invitational on April 1 - 3. Hollins placed fifth in the nine-team event that featured many of the best teams in the south region. Gabby, a sophomore from San Antonio, TX, posted the best two-round total of her college career. She finished with two birdies on day two to post a career-best round of 84, 11 strokes better than her previous top score. Thanks to her performance, Hollins posted a four player score of 323, a modern Hollins golf record. |
| Hollins riders Emma Lane Poole '13, Sarah Brown '13, and Catherine Hensly '14 are headed to the IHSA Nationals in Raleigh after strong individual showings at the Zone 4 Region 2 Horse Show, held at Goucher College on Saturday, April 7. On Friday, April 6, the Hollins riding team competed at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship, hosted by Lynchburg College. With one first-place finish (Equitation over Fences-Course B) and two third-place finishes (Equitation over Fences-Course A and Equitation on the Flat), Hollins was named Reserve Champion, finishing second to Sweet Briar College. Sarah Brown '13, Sarah Jarosinski '12, Meredith McDonnell '12, and Emma Lane Poole '13 represented Hollins at the event; Poole was named Rider of the Year and she and Brown were both named to the All-ODAC Team. |

With the win, Hollins is in a tie for third in the ODAC with the Maroons. Bolstered by her win at #4 singles, Shawnte went 3-0 for the week. She is currently 9-1 at the #4 spot for the season. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for March 19: Priscila Montoya '14 of the tennis team. The tennis team took a spring break trip to Orlando, Florida, to play two matches against strong competition. Hollins went 1-1 on the trip, bolstered by the play of Priscila at #3 singles and #1 doubles. She won a hard-fought, three-set match against Lawrence University, coming away with a 6-1, 4-6, 13-11 victory. The very next morning, Priscila won a come- from-behind match against Huntingdon College. She lost the first set before storming back, 7-6 and 10-6, to pick up another win. She also teamed with her sister (Karen '14) to go 1-1 at #1 doubles. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for March 12: Elizabeth Cheng '14 of the golf team. On March 16 - 18, Hollins played in the prestigious Jekyll Island Collegiate, the largest DIII tournament in the country. Hollins finished 13th in the 21-team field that included 11 of the top 25 teams in the country. Elizabeth improved each round, concluding with a final round 76. The sophomore from Virginia Beach finished in a tie for seventh place out of 113 golfers, including six of the top 10 and 24 of the top 75 golfers in the country. She has finished in the top 10 in each of her six events this season. |

| D3Hoops.com, a leading Web site for Division III basketball information, has named Hollins guard Jasmine Greene '13 to its Women's All-South Region Third Team. Team members were selected by sports information directors within the region. This is the second time in three seasons Jasmine has earned All-South honors. Two years ago she garnered Second Team honors and is just one of two Old Dominion Athletic Conference players to be recognized this season. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for February 27: Erika LaWall '12 of the lacrosse team. Hollins' young team, looking to build upon last season, opened its 2012 campaign at home against Roanoke College, which was picked third in the ODAC Women's Lacrosse Preseason Poll. Erika, a midfielder and team captain from Cary, North Carolina, led the way for Hollins by causing three turnovers, picking up a game-high four ground balls, and securing a draw control. Hollins fell to the Maroons but will be looking to rebound with three matches in the coming week. |

Andrea will proceed to the Mid-Atlantic Regional competition to be held at the University of Maryland on April 13. She dropped just two games at the top singles spot en route to a 24-2 game record in the two matches. She teamed with Sarah Grace McCormick '15 to go 2-0 at #1 doubles, bringing her overall record to 4-0 in her first two ODAC matches. | Kindra Wyatt '14 has been named the winner of a $10,000 award from the Fund for Education Abroad's Hiliary Echo Douglas Memorial Scholarship to study in India during the 2012-13 academic year. Wyatt is among just 11 students selected from a pool of 224 applicants representing over 190 U. | Student Athlete of the Week for February 13: Chanci Wright '14 of the basketball team. The team's regular season came to an end last week with a pair of games over the weekend. In a close loss to ODAC-leading Virginia Wesleyan, Wright recorded the first double-double of her career. She scored 13 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. The very next afternoon, Hollins pulled off a season-ending upset over heavily favored Randolph-Macon College. Wright eclipsed her effort against the Marlins by scoring 13 points to go with her game-high 13 rebounds. Hollins finished the season with an 8-12 conference mark. |
| The Hollins riding team earned High Point Team at the IHSA Horse Show hosted by Hollins on Saturday, February 18. Sarah Brown '14, took first in Intermediate Fences and first in Intermediate Flat, and was the competition's High Point Rider. Emma Lane Poole '14, captured first in Open Fences and second in Open Flat, finished in a three-way tie for Reserve High Point Rider, but lost in the ride-off against the two other riders. | Ashley Tucker '14 was recently honored as the recipient of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Dr. Perneller Chubb-Wilson Justice Award at its Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday banquet in Roanoke. Tucker was the youngest recipient of this chapter's highest award. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for February 6: Maggie Dwyer '14 of the swim team. Maggie earned three medals at the 2012 ODAC Swimming Championships, held Feb. 9 - 12. She finished fifth in the 500 Freestyle and by three seconds broke the Hollins record in the event - a record that had stood since 1988. She also reached the finals in the 200 Butterfly and captured eighth in that event. In the most thrilling competition of the meet, Maggie led the 1650 Freestyle for most of the race and battled a four-year swimmer from Washington & Lee in the event's final yards, finishing second by just .22 of a second. |
| The Hollins swim team capped a very successful 9-6 regular season record with a strong seventh-place showing at the 2012 ODAC Swimming Championships, held February 10-12 in Greensboro. Among the standout individual performances, Maggie Dwyer '14 reached the finals in three different individual events. On the first day of competition, she finished sixth in the 500 Freestyle and on day two helped the 800 Freestyle Relay team (Meg O'Brien '15, Sage Otto '13, and Audrey James '15) clinch fifth. James also earned a spot in the 200 Freestyle finals and finished 16th out of 28 swimmers. On the final day of the Championships, Dwyer led the 1650 Freestyle through the first 1400 yards and then battled Washington and Lee senior swimmer Joanie Hudak over the final 250 yards. Dwyer came in just .22 of a second behind Hudak in one of the most thrilling finishes of the meet. Later, Dwyer captured eighth in the finals of the 200 Butterfly, while O'Brien was 13th. |

| The Hollins University riding team outpaced squads from five other colleges and universities to capture High Point honors at the Bridgewater College IHSA Horse Show, held February 11. Hollins, which now holds third place in IHSA’s Zone 4, Region 2, scored 35 points to defeat Bridgewater (30 points) the University of Virginia (28), Sweet Briar College (27), Randolph College (27), and Lynchburg College (24). Emma Lane Poole '13 was the competition’s Reserve High Point Rider, taking first place in Open Fences and fourth in Open Flat. The Hollins University riding team earned Reserve Champion titles at Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) events hosted by Randolph College on February 3 and Sweet Briar College on February 5. The team currently stands fourth overall in IHSA Zone 4, Region 2. Emma Lane Poole '13 was the overall High Point Rider at the Randolph horse show, finishing first in Open Equitation on the Flat and third in Open Equitation over Fences. | Student Athlete of the Week for January 30: Chanci Wright '14 of the basketball team. Last week, Hollins completed the season sweep of Washington & Lee with a thrilling 71-68 win in double overtime. Chanci, a 6'0" post player from Eden, Texas, led Hollins with 16 points. Chanci was a perfect four-for-four from the free throw line and also added five rebounds, a steal, and a blocked shot. Defensively, Chanci helped to hold one of the leading scorers in the ODAC to just seven points and provided Hollins a solid inside presence against the Generals. In a road game later in the week at Bridgewater, Chanci led Hollins with eight rebounds, and in a tough loss to Lynchburg College, Chanci was the second leading scorer for Hollins. |

| Five students from Hollins will participate in the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges’ 13th annual statewide collegiate Wells Fargo Ethics Bowl on February 12-13, 2012, on the campus of Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. The Hollins University team will compete head-to-head against other highly qualified student teams from Virginia's 14 leading independent colleges and universities, debating a variety of case studies highlighting campus-based dilemmas. The Hollins University student team members are: Morgan Conroy '12; Jessica Hall '12; Jennifer Hau '12; Rachel O’Connell '14; and Bethny Barrett '15. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 23: Lauren Morris '15 of the basketball team. This past week the team went 2-0 in ODAC play and currently sits in sixth place in the 11-team league. In a a 91-83 win over Emory and Henry, Lauren scored 21 points to go with 10 rebounds, one assist, one block, and two steals. On Saturday, she helped Hollins to a 72-59 win at Randolph College. Her 18 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks paced Hollins to a 6-7 record in the ODAC. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 16: Sage Otto '13 of the swim team. During that week, Hollins went 1-1 in a pair of ODAC meets. In a loss to Sweet Briar, Sage finished third in the 100 Backstroke. At Emory & Henry, she contributed to an easy 136-72 road victory when she won the 100 Freestyle and earned second place points in the 200 Individual Medley. As part of the 400 Freestyle Relay team, she helped establish yet another Hollins varsity record against the Wasps. Hollins is currently 7-4 on the season. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 9: Audrey James '15 of the swim team. In a meet against Bridgewater College and Ferrum College, Audrey earned three second-place finishes against Bridgewater and three firsts against the Panthers. Her time in the 200-Meter Freestyle established a new Hollins varsity record. However, Audrey knew that Maggie Dwyer '14 had a shot at the same record later in the meet. She supported Maggie the entire meet and was the one cheering the loudest when Maggie broke her hour-old record. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 2: Jasmine Greene '13 of the basketball team. Boasting a 3-1 ODAC record, the team came back from winter break last week to play three conference games, including a loss to Guilford College, another defeat on a last-second shot to Bridgewater College, and an upset victory at Lynchburg College. For the week Jasmine scored 62 points to go with 19 rebounds, 17 assists, and eight steals. She currently leads the ODAC in scoring and assists while ranking second in steals. With 26 points against Bridgewater, Jasmine became just the 10th Hollins player to surpass the 1,000-point mark in her career. With a season and a half remaining, Jasmine is on pace to become the all-time leading scorer in Hollins basketball history. |
| Dan A. R. Kelly, who is currently pursuing his M.F.A. in screenwriting and film studies at Hollins, has been hired by Susie’s Hope Movie, LLC, as the screenwriter for the true story of Susie, the dog who was beaten and burned but survived to inspire the state of North Carolina to create new laws preventing animal cruelty. Proceeds from the film will benefit non-profit work in animal cruelty prevention and education. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 28: Maggie Dwyer '14 of the swim team. The team traveled to Sweet Briar for a tri-meet with the Vixens and Ferrum College. Hollins came away with a split and takes a 5-2 record into winter break. Maggie won two individual events and swam a leg on the winning relay team. She captured the 400-Meter Freestyle event after setting a varsity record in winning the 800-Meter Freestyle, and won both events by half a pool-length over her nearest competitor. Maggie then helped to set a varsity record when Hollins won the 200-Meter Freestyle Relay. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for November 21: Molly Tahmaseb '14 of the basketball team. On November 22, Hollins hosted Emory & Henry College in their ODAC opener and came away with a 74-62 victory. With the win, Hollins went into the break tied atop the ODAC standings. Tahamaseb, a Greensboro, North Carolina native, scored a game and career-high 18 points to go with her three rebounds and two steals. She also hit 12 of 15 free-throw attempts. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 14: Jasmine Greene '13 of the basketball team. Hollins opened the 2011-12 basketball season with three games, all of which they lost in heartbreaking fashion, coming up four points short in each contest. Greene put up numbers that validated her All-ODAC selection a season ago. For the week, the Hampton, VA native averaged 18.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per outing. She also led the team with 15 assists and 10 steals. For her efforts in the McDaniel College Tip-Off Tournament, Greene was named to the All-Tournament Team. |

Anderson are among the cast of "Miss Lucy," a folk opera based on the life of Roanoke education pioneer Lucy Addison that will be staged Thursday and Friday, Nov. 17 & 18, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. All performances will be in the June M. In a meet against VMI, Meg brought home points in three different events in Hollins' effort to upset the Division I Keydets. Against Ferrum, she collected first-place points in three different events to help lead Hollins to an easy home victory. Meg won the 200 Individual Medley by almost 10 seconds. | Student Athlete of the Week for October 24: Maggie Dwyer '14 of the Hollins swim team. On October 29, the Hollins swim team hosted a tri-meet with Gallaudet University and Greensboro College. Hollins defeated both opponents to go 2-0 on the season. Maggie won two individual events, the 200 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly, and was a member of the winning 200 Freestyle relay team. She already has six wins in a season that has just gotten under way. The event also featured men's competition between Gallaudet and Greensboro. Maggie's time in the 100 Butterfly would have earned her first-place points in the men's meet as well. |

| The Hollins paddling team overcame rain and sub 40-degree temperatures to defeat Sweet Briar College in the American Canoe Association (ACA) Collegiate Race Series Virginia Championship, held October 29 on the Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg. The paddlers competed in three classes, OC1, K1 and OC2. Carmella Glazier '15 took the OC1 title with a time of 11 minutes, 34 seconds, while Tina DelPup '12 and Mia McDonald '12 won in OC2 competition by clocking in at 11 minutes, nine seconds, which was also the fastest time of the day. The closest race of the day came in the K1 class, where Madeleine Regan '12 edged Sweet Briar’s Syndney Fuller by just one second to win the class title with a time of 11 minutes, 12 seconds. Also representing Hollins at the event were Jessica Sheperd '14, Brittany Gardner '14, Jentry Campbell '15, and Sadie Giles. |
| Student Athletes of the Week for October 17: Hollins Soccer Seniors - Ashley Cassidy, Kristen Norkus, Erica Smith, and Mary Wells. The seniors led the soccer team to two Old Dominion Athletic Conference victories last week. After picking up a 3-1 win at Sweet Briar last Saturday, the team hosted Randolph College on Tuesday and won a close 1-0 contest over the WildCats. This success sets the stage for the season-ending game against Eastern Mennonite; a victory would give Hollins three ODAC wins in a row for the first time. The win over Sweet Briar was the fourth straight against the Vixens for this quartet of seniors, giving them an undefeated record against their biggest ODAC rival. |
| Sarah Jarosinski ’12 and Emma Lane Poole ’13 delivered standout performances at the Randolph College Fall Festival Horse Show, held October 22-23. In the three phases of the Oak Ridge Medal Finals, Jarosinski placed third in gymnastics, third in over fences, and second place overall, while Poole finished seventh in gymnastics, second in the flat phase, eighth in over fences, and eighth overall. Riding Tres Coronas, Jarosinski took second in the .95 jumpers category. Poole, atop her own horse James Dean, finished second in the .85 jumpers category and captured first in the Southwest Virginia Hunter/Jumper Association Adult Medal competition. |

The libero/defensive specialist from Peoria, Arizona, helped lead Hollins to a big ODAC victory over Virginia Wesleyan College. In the win, Morgan recorded 32 digs, a Hollins varsity record. Currently, she is third in the ODAC in digs per game. |

Agopian rode "Piece of the Rock" to capture Reserve Champion Adult Hunter (4th, Low Hunter Over Fences, 4th, Low Hunter Under Saddle, and 1st, Adult Hunter Over Fences). | Student Athlete of the Week for October 3: Trudy Siziba '12 of the tennis team. Trudy was a standout performer during the Hollins tennis team's final event of the fall, the ODAC Fall Individual Tennis Championships. During the two-day event hosted by Randolph Macon College, Hollins players reached six of the 11 finals competitions and Trudy was the lone Hollins winner, defeating her opponent from Sweet Briar by a score of 7-5, 6-2 to capture the Flight 7 Singles Final. Trudy also teamed with Caitlin Hoerr '13 to reach the final match in Flight 4 Doubles where they fell to a team from Sweet Briar in a tightly contested 8-6 match. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for September 19: Coty Hudson '15 of the Hollins University golf team. The team played their second event of the fall Sept. 24-25 when they hosted Radford University at Ashley Plantation in Daleville. Shooting a 79, Hudson placed third, just one shot out of the runner-up spot; the performance was the Lynchburg native's second consecutive top five finish. |

Last weekend the Hollins golf team joined eight other teams and 56 golfers in competition at the Sixth Annual Piedmont Invitational, one of the South's top tournaments. Elizabeth finished in a tie for third place at the two-day event with a score of 156, just four shots behind the tournament winner. She helped lead Hollins to a sixth-place finish for the weekend. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for September 5: Mandi McDade '15 of the volleyball team. McDade, a 6'0" middle blocker from Eustis, FL, helped lead Hollins to a 3-1 record this week. After an early week loss at Averett, Hollins came home to win three matches, all sweeps, in less than 24 hours. Mandi recorded 37 kills, one assist, 12 service aces, five total blocks and 40 digs. Her effort earned McDade a spot on the ODAC Weekly Honor Roll for Volleyball. Included in her kills was the first double-digit kill match of her young Hollins career, 15 against Mary Baldwin. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for August 29: Ally Reed '13 of the volleyball team. The Hollins volleyball team opened their season last weekend with a trip to the Virginia Beach area for five matches. After a match at Christopher Newport, Hollins played four matches in the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational. Ally Reed from Sterling, VA, led the way for Hollins. For the weekend, Reed posted team highs in kills (40), digs (67), and service aces (9). |
| Elizabeth Cheng '14, a member of the Hollins golf team, has been named to the 2010-11 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar Team for Division III. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50. Cheng is the only golfer from a Division III college or university in Virginia to be named to the All-American Scholar Team this year. |

| Mezzo-soprano, Helena Brown '12, has been accepted into and will be attending the Lied Austria International vocal workshop this summer in Graz, Austria. Helena will be studying German Lieder with Wolfgang Lockeman, noted authority on the German art song repertoire and its poetry. |

In the January 8th game against Lynchburg, Forrest came off the bench to score a game high 14 points, including 10 in the first half. For the week Lacie averaged 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 29: Claire Caprio '14 of the swim team. On December 2, Claire and the swim team traveled to Lexington to face VMI, an NCAA DI swim program. Caprio won both of the individual events in which she was entered. Claire won the 100 Freestyle by beating the VMI swimmer by .06 seconds and then went on to win the 200 Freestyle later in the meet. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 15: Carrie Cox '14 of the basketball team. In the home opener on November 19, Hollins staged a double-digit comeback to defeat NAIA's Alice Lloyd 72-70. Carrie came off the bench to spark a Hollins run. The Lynch Station native hit four of the five shots she took en route to nine huge points for the home squad. The win helped Hollins get off to a 2-1 start on the young season. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 1: Ceseli Slovacek '14 of the golf team. Ceseli and her teammates competed at the Richmond Lady Spider Invitational, Nov. 1 - 2. Hollins was the only non-Division I school in the 10-team field. In her third round, Slovacek shot an 81 to best each of her playing partners from Towson and Rutgers. Ceseli helped lead Hollins to defeat Seton Hall during the event. |
| Hollins riders took first, third, and fourth place in medal competition along with Grand Champion and Reserve Champion titles during the Southwest Virginia Hunter/Jumper Association (SWVH/JA) Finals, held at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, November 5-7. Sarah Jarosinski '12 won the gold, Meredith McDonnell '12 captured the bronze, and Kristina Sprenkle '13 finished fourth in the SWVH/JA Adult Medal Finals. Sprenkle won the championship in the Adult Hunter Division and was Grand Champion for the Children/Adult Hunter Divisions. Arden Cone '12 was Reserve Champion (runner up) in the Adult Amateur Division, while Emma Lane Poole '13 was Reserve Champion in the Open Hunter Division. Also competing in the end-of-year hunter/jumper horse show were Rachel Uliano '12 (5th, Special Adult Over Fences; 4th and 6th, Open Hunter Over Fences; 6th, Open Hunter Under Saddle), Blair St. Ledger-Olson '13 (4th, Adult Amateur Over Fences; 2nd, Low Hunter Over Fences; 5th, Low Hunter Under Saddle), and Tyne Hovda '11 (6th, Low Hunter Over Fences). |
| Student Athlete of the Week for October 25: Maggie Dwyer '14 of the swim team. On October 28, in a meet against Greensboro College, Maggie won three events to help lead Hollins to a 110-77 win. Dwyer won the 200 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly, and the 500 Freestyle in the team's first victory of the young season. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for October 18: India Richey '14 of the volleyball team. Last week in three matches, Richey recorded 13 kills, 85 assists, 21 digs, and six service aces. In a five-set match against Randolph College, India recorded a triple-double when she had 10 kills, 39 assists, and 14 digs. India is currently leading the team in assists with 355 and second on the team with 36 service aces. |
| Six members of the Hollins Cross Country Club - Melissa Hammond '12, Amie Fleming-Haddock '13, Sarah Gettman '14, Sarah Johnson '11, Anne Patrick '12, and Carolyn Belling '11 - all completed one of the Roanoke Valley’s most unique running event – the four-mile "Into the Darkness Run" on Saturday, October 23rd at Explore Park near the Blue Ridge Parkway. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for October 11: Ally Reed '14 of the volleyball team. Ally and her teammates went 4-0 last week to even their record to 10-10 on the season. In a home match against Randolph College, Reed recorded a match high in kills (12), digs (23), and service aces (5). The very next night when Hollins hosted Mary Baldwin, Ally again led the way with 12 kills and 15 digs. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for September 27: Dani Franklin '14, a first-year midfielder on the soccer team from Chesapeake Beach, Md. In a thrilling 1-0 ODAC win over visiting Emory & Henry, Dani was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick late in the contest. Franklin beat the Wasp keeper for her first game-winning goal of the season and led the team to a critical conference win. Dani currently leads the team with five goals and 10 points. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for September 13: Nicole Hemmis '14, a first-year golfer from Suffolk, VA. Last weekend the golf team competed at the Piedmont Fall Invitational in Clarksville, GA. The tournament consisted of 12 teams and 63 golfers. In her first college event, Nicole came in sixth place and helped to lead the team to a third-place finish - including an eight-stroke advantage over host Piedmont College. |
| Cross-country runners Amie Fleming-Haddock '13 and Melissa Hammond '12 completed the Blue Ridge Marathon in Roanoke on April 24. Amie was the 26th woman to cross the line and Melissa was the 40th. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for April 19: the golf team, who won the Gettysburg Invitational on April 17-18. Leading the team was sophomore J.R. Woolwine with a two-day total of 170. J.R. also placed 3rd overall as an individual. The team competed against seven other teams. Hollins won by a margin of 15 shots over Gettysburg. After the 1st round Hollins scored 371, which is the lowest score of the season for a round for Hollins. |
| The Hollins University riding team captured the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship at the equestrian finals on Friday, April 9. All four team members - Katie Furches '10, Emma Lane Poole '13, Meredith McDonnell '12, and Kristina Sprenkle '13 - were named All-ODAC; Furches was honored as ODAC Rider of the Year and Coach Sandy Gerald was named ODAC Coach of the Year. On Sunday, April 11, Hollins qualified to complete at the National IHSA Horse Show in Lexington, Ky., May 4-9, as Reserve Champions at the Zone Horse Show. Hollins finished second to Virginia Intermont, 47-43. Team members include: Katie Furches '10, Meredith McDonnell '12, Kristina Sprenkle '13, Sarah Jarosinski '12, Tyne Hovda '11, Caitlin Shipe '13, and Andrea Moreau '10. |

| "The (Wild)Life Corridor: Fragmentation and Reconciliation in Janisse Ray's Southern Ecosystems," by Jes Gearing, a graduate student in the Creative Writing M.F.A. program, has been accepted for presentation at the inaugural conference of "The Ecological Community," of the Association for Literature, Environment, and Culture in Canada, which will be held August 19-21, 2010, at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia. |
| Congrats to Chad Handley and Ryan Neighbors, students in Hollins' M.F.A. program in screenwriting & film studies, on their great showing in the Acclaim Film & TV Script Contest. Chad won first prize and $500 in the Spec Script Category (for a show already in existence) for his "30 Rock" script, "Never Go Back." Ryan was a finalist in the same category for "Speed," a script for "The Office." |
| Amy Clayton, a student in the children’s literature graduate program, has an essay published in the current issue of the online, peer-reviewed journal Red Feather: An International Journal of Children's Culture. Her essay is titled "The Future of Feminism is Slayed: Tomboyism in Joss Whedon's Fray," and it is based on the final research paper that she wrote last summer for Assistant Professor of English Michelle Abate’s course on tomboyism in children's literature. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 18: Sage Otto '13, a member of the Hollins swim team. During last weekend's meet with Salem College and Gallaudet University, the team needed a distance swimmer. Sage, who normally swims sprints, unselfishly stepped up and competed in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. In the 1000, Sage finished first against Salem and second against Gallaudet. In the 500, she trailed the pack by as much as 20 yards before making a huge push in the last 150 yards of the race to finish second against both schools. Despite an already physically grueling meet, Sage went on to swim in the 200 Freestyle Relay. She paced Hollins to a first-place finish with her personal-best time during her leg of the relay. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for December 7: Kate Teiken '12, from Hershey, Pa. Kate was instrumental in helping the Hollins swim team earn victories over Salem and Emory & Henry in a quad meet at Sweet Briar last weekend. She finished first in six of the eight events in which she competed. Kate is majoring in art history with a double minor in business and studio art. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 30: Jasmine Greene '13 from Hampton, Va. Jasmine has made an immediate impact on the basketball team this season. On November 20, she tallied 22 points, six rebounds and six steals in a game against Mary Baldwin College. Currently, she is leading the ODAC in scoring and assists. |
| Student Athletes of the Week for November 16: the Hollins basketball team. On November 15, Hollins beat Gallaudet 78-74 to snap a 63-game losing streak. In the first half Hollins was led by Tamara Phillips '11, who hit five three-pointers to help keep the score close. In the second half, Jasmine Greene '13 paced the team and ended the game with a team-high 31 points. Kendra McCain '13 scored nine points and had eight rebounds, while Brittany Hanavan '13 and Lacie Forrest '13 also made significant contributions to the victory. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 2 is Sarah Jarosinski '12. This past weekend Sarah placed first in the Novice Equitation Over Fences at both the Bridgewater and UVa IHSA Horse Shows. Her performance at both events earned Sarah Reserve Champion High Point Team designation at each show. Sarah is a sophomore from Powhatan, Virginia. She is majoring in biology with a minor is chemistry. |
