Student Athlete of the Week for March 15 is J.R. Woolwine '12, a member of the Hollins golf team. A history major and French minor from Fairfax, Virginia, J.R. finished seventh out of 46 players at the Piedmont Invitational last week. She shot an 85 and an 89 in her two rounds of play. |
| Fiona Zwieb '10, music major and business minor, Certificate in Arts Management, was recently accepted into Columbia College Chicago in the Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management (AEMM) graduate program. She hopes to develop her emerging leadership potential for a managing position in the arts, entertainment, and media fields. |
| Paige Oberlin '11, co-chair of the Hollins chapter of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, has been invited to speak on the plenary panel of the National Young Feminist Leadership Conference along with FMF President Ellie Smeal, Congresswoman Rosa Delauro, and others in Washington, D.C., March 20-21. Paige is double majoring in gender and women's studies and political science. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for March 8 is Karen Montoya '13, a member of the Hollins tennis team. In a match against Sweet Briar, Karen and partner Mariah Bryant '13 overcame a 5-7 deficit at #2 doubles to win 9-7 in a crucial doubles match and give Hollins a 2-1 lead. Karen then played #1 singles and won her match in a third set tiebreaker against an experienced senior. Hollins went on to defeat Sweet Briar 8-1. Karen's performance has also earned her ODAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors. Karen is from Delicias, Chihuahua in Mexico and plans to major in business. |
| "The (Wild)Life Corridor: Fragmentation and Reconciliation in Janisse Ray's Southern Ecosystems," by Jes Gearing, a graduate student in the Creative Writing M.F.A. program, has been accepted for presentation at the inaugural conference of "The Ecological Community," of the Association for Literature, Environment, and Culture in Canada, which will be held August 19-21, 2010, at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for March 1 is Katie Furches '10, a rider from Oley, Pennsylvania. At the Hollins IHSA Horse Show on February 27, Katie won first place in the Open Flat competition and finished second in Open Over Fences. The following day, she took first in Open Over Fences and fourth in Open Flat at the University of Virginia IHSA Horse Show. By virtue of her performances at Hollins and UVa, Katie has captured the 2009-2010 Zone 4, Region 2 High Point Rider Championship. She is now eligible to compete at the National IHSA Championship Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky, May 6-9. |
| The Hollins riding team competed in two horse shows February 27 and 28, capturing a fourth-place tie at the Hollins Horse Show on Saturday and third at Sunday's show at the University of Virginia. Year-end results are as follows for IHSA Zone 4, Region 2: Champion High Point Team: Hollins University (221 points) Reserve Champion: Lynchburg College (186 points) Third: Bridgewater College (184 points) Fourth: Sweet Briar College (179 points) Fifth: W&L University (153 points) Sixth: Randolph College/UVa (146 points). Hollins moves on to compete against the regional High Point Teams from Zones 1 and 3 on Sunday, April 11 at Virginia Tech. The first and second-place teams from that event go to the National IHSA Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky, May 6-9. Individual riders qualifying for the Zone Horse Show on April 11 include: Amanda Dibben '12: Walk Trot Arden Cone '12: Intermediate Flat Katie Furches '10: Open Flat, Open over Fences Emma Lane Poole '13: Open over Fences Should these riders win first or second place at the Zone Horse Show, they will also compete in individual competition at the National Horse Show in May. | Three members of the Hollins University basketball team received post-season honors at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's end-of-season banquet on Wednesday, February 24. Tamara Phillips '11 (Roanoke, VA/Lord Botetourt High School), made the All-ODAC team for the third consecutive season. The junior guard averaged 15.0 ppg, 3.8 rebounds, 2.02 assists, and 2 steals per game. During the season, Phillips became just the ninth player in Hollins's history to eclipse the 1,000 mark and was able to break her own school record for three pointers (60) by connecting on 75 shots for long range. Candace Berra '12 (Buchanan, VA/James River High School) was selected to the 2010 ODAC All Sportsmanship team. The team's 11 members were nominated and voted on by the ODAC coaches. Jasmine Greene '13 (Hampton, VA/Tabb High School) was named the 2010 ODAC Rookie of the Year. She currently ranks second in the league in points per game, registering 19.2 points per contest and she leads the conference with 3.20 steals per game. Greene has scored double-figures in 21 of 25 games played this season, surpassing 20 points 14 different times. Jasmine also broke the Hollins single season scoring record by netting 481 points. She broke the old record of 457 that was held by Hollins Hall of Fame member Robin Gaines. Greene is the first Hollins player ever to win this award. |
| Student Athletes of the Week for February 22: Jasmine Greene '13 and Tamara Phillips '11 from the Hollins basketball team. During the final week of the basketball season, Jasmine averaged 21.66 points, 7.33 rebounds, and 2.33 steals, and became Hollins' single-season scoring leader. Her 481 points this season eclipsed the old mark of 457. Tamara averaged 14 points, 2 rebounds, and 2.33 assists, and became only the ninth player in school history to score 1,000 points. Their performances paced Hollins to a 73-71 victory over Emory & Henry. |
| During the weekend of February 20, the Hollins riding team competed at the Sweet Briar IHSA Horse Show, earning a third place finish behind Randolph College and Sweet Briar. A total of three points separated the top three teams. Hollins still leads the region by 32 points over Bridgewater College with two shows remaining this season (at Hollins this Saturday and at UVa the following weekend). If the team wins the region, it moves on to compete at the Zone Horse Show on April 11 at Virginia Tech against two other regional winners. The top two teams at that competition go on to Nationals, which will be held this year in Lexington, Kentucky. |
| Student Athletes of the Week for February 15: Three seniors from the Hollins swim team delivered outstanding performances during the ODAC/Atlantic States meet at Radford University Feb. 13. Erin Lavinder-Stott '10 swam her best times at Hollins in the 100 Back, 200 Back and 200 Fly. Cameron Foster '10 swam lifetime bests in the 400 IM, 100 Fly, and the 200 Fly. Caroline Studley '10 also swam lifetime bests in three individual events, the 1650, 200 Fly, and 500 Free. |

| A student team from Hollins University earned a berth in the semifinals at the 11th Annual intercollegiate Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation Ethics Bowl debate competition, held February 14 and 15 in Richmond. Congratulations to team members Emilie Ansay '12, Lianne Jackson '11, and Elysse Stolpe '10. A program of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, the Bowl featured a theme of Ethics & Education and involved student teams from 15 private colleges and universities in Virginia debating case studies with ethical dilemmas within the topic of education. The teams presented their analysis, positions and recommendations to panels of judges comprised of business, professional, and educational leaders drawn from throughout Virginia. Randolph-Macon College defeated Hampden-Sydney College to win this year's event, while Hollins was joined by Roanoke College as semifinalists, runners-up. |
| Congrats to Chad Handley and Ryan Neighbors, students in Hollins' M.F.A. program in screenwriting & film studies, on their great showing in the Acclaim Film & TV Script Contest. Chad won first prize and $500 in the Spec Script Category (for a show already in existence) for his "30 Rock" script, "Never Go Back." Ryan was a finalist in the same category for "Speed," a script for "The Office." |
| Amy Clayton, a student in the children’s literature graduate program, has an essay published in the current issue of the online, peer-reviewed journal Red Feather: An International Journal of Children's Culture. Her essay is titled "The Future of Feminism is Slayed: Tomboyism in Joss Whedon's Fray," and it is based on the final research paper that she wrote last summer for Assistant Professor of English Michelle Abate’s course on tomboyism in children's literature. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 18: Sage Otto '13, a member of the Hollins swim team. During last weekend's meet with Salem College and Gallaudet University, the team needed a distance swimmer. Sage, who normally swims sprints, unselfishly stepped up and competed in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. In the 1000, Sage finished first against Salem and second against Gallaudet. In the 500, she trailed the pack by as much as 20 yards before making a huge push in the last 150 yards of the race to finish second against both schools. Despite an already physically grueling meet, Sage went on to swim in the 200 Freestyle Relay. She paced Hollins to a first-place finish with her personal-best time during her leg of the relay. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for January 11: Tamara Phillips '11, a member of the Hollins basketball team. A junior from Roanoke, Tamara scored 42 points and hit ten three-point shots in three games last week. She is on pace to shatter the three-point single-season record. Currently, she is third in the ODAC in scoring and leads the conference with 35 three-pointers. |

Kate was instrumental in helping the Hollins swim team earn victories over Salem and Emory & Henry in a quad meet at Sweet Briar last weekend. She finished first in six of the eight events in which she competed. Kate is majoring in art history with a double minor in business and studio art. |
| Hollins equestrian team member Arden Cone '12 is one of 12 riders chosen from across the nation to participate in an Emerging Athletes Program (EAP) National Level Training Session in Reno, Nevada, in January. She will work with Peter Wilde, a world-renowned rider. Cone qualified for the Region II United States Hunter Jumper Association EAP Level II Training Session in Naples, Florida, where she worked with international Grand Prix rider Allison Firestone Robitaille and Olympic gold medalist Melanie Smith Taylor. Cone was selected for the National Level Training Session after achieving the highest score on the written horsemanship test administered at the regional session. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 30: Jasmine Greene '13 from Hampton, Va. Jasmine has made an immediate impact on the basketball team this season. On November 20, she tallied 22 points, six rebounds and six steals in a game against Mary Baldwin College. Currently, she is leading the ODAC in scoring and assists. |
| Student Athletes of the Week for November 16: the Hollins basketball team. On November 15, Hollins beat Gallaudet 78-74 to snap a 63-game losing streak. In the first half Hollins was led by Tamara Phillips '11, who hit five three-pointers to help keep the score close. In the second half, Jasmine Greene '13 paced the team and ended the game with a team-high 31 points. Kendra McCain '13 scored nine points and had eight rebounds, while Brittany Hanavan '13 and Lacie Forrest '13 also made significant contributions to the victory. |
| A team of faculty and student scientists at Hollins has discovered that beverages from soda fountain machines can harbor microorganisms that may contribute to episodic gastric distress in the general population and could potentially pose a more significant threat to people with compromised immune systems. The research was completed summer 2009 and is available online in the International Journal of Food Microbiology (6-NOV-2009 DOI: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2009.10.031). Biology department faculty members Rene Godard, Amy White, Rebecca Beach, and students Carolyn Belling'11 and Vicki Kasza '09 co-authored the study. "Is your soft drink making you sick?" | Student Athlete of the Week for November 9 is Katie Furches '10, a rider from Oley, Pennsylvania. On November 7, Katie won the Southwest Va. Hunter/Jumper Gold Medal Finals at the Virginia Horse Center. She had to qualify during the 2009 show season at various horse shows in the area and competed against 15 other riders from around the state, mostly college students. During this three-phase event, each rider performed a course of eight jumps, then competed in a "flat" phase (walk, trot, canter). Finally, the top four riders had to ride a test over jumps. This is the second time this fall that Katie has been named Student Athlete of the Week. |

Meredith McDonnell '12 finished seventh in this prestigious class. Emma Lane Poole '13 finished fourth in the Children's Gold Medal Finals. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for November 2 is Sarah Jarosinski '12. This past weekend Sarah placed first in the Novice Equitation Over Fences at both the Bridgewater and UVa IHSA Horse Shows. Her performance at both events earned Sarah Reserve Champion High Point Team designation at each show. Sarah is a sophomore from Powhatan, Virginia. She is majoring in biology with a minor is chemistry. |

| Student Athlete of the Week for October 26 is Sage Otto '13, from Hampton, Virginia. Last weekend at Washington and Lee University she swam in five events and had her personal best times in four of them. She was also the leadoff swimmer in the 150 backstroke, in which the team took third place, their highest finish of the day. With her efforts Sage helped the team earn fifth place overall. |

At the Hollins IHSA show on October 18, Katie placed second in over the fences and first on the flat. With those two finishes Katie earned the recognition of High Point Rider for the event. Hollins riders won at Randolph College on October 16 and here at Hollins on October 18. Hollins scored 38 points to top nine other colleges, including Bridgewater (32), Randolph (30), Sweet Briar (26), and W & L (24). On Sunday, Furches again paced the Hollins team to victory, winning top honors as high point rider. Overall, the team won seven blue ribbons and three seconds. In addition to the above riders, other team participants in this weekend's shows included Tyne Hovda '11, Taylor Richardson '11, Cailin Asip '11, Rachel Uliano '12, Allison Wiltshire '13, and Andrea Moreau '10. Currently, Hollins leads the region with 80 points, followed by Bridgewater (68), Lynchburg (50), Randolph (44), Sweet Briar (42), W & L (40), UVa (37), JMU (36), Radford (25), and Longwood (24). |
| Martha Sadler '10 has been accepted into the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Undergraduate Fellows Program. The program is a mentoring program for undergraduate students wishing to explore the field of student affairs and/or higher education, with a specific focus on increasing the number of historically disenfranchised and underrepresented professionals in the field. If selected, students are given the opportunity to attend a national conference, participate in paid internships, and participate in the Summer Leadership Institute in addition to working with their mentor on-campus. Fellows also receive a complimentary membership in NASPA and opportunities to apply for special graduate school scholarships. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for October 12 is Colleen Thamm '10, co-captain of the Hollins soccer team. This season Colleen leads the team in goals scored with 11. Last weekend against Randolph College, Colleen scored both goals to beat Randolph 2-1. The winning goal came with less than 10 minutes left in the game and was a free kick 25 yards from the goal. Colleen is from Manassas, Virginia and is majoring in communication studies and minoring in studio art. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for October 5 is Morgan Dean '13, a goalkeeper for the Hollins soccer team. Last weekend prior to the game against Lynchburg College, Morgan was put in goal as a last-minute replacement for the starting goalkeeper, who was injured during warm-ups. Morgan recorded 17 saves against the ODAC preseason #1 pick. Morgan is from Draper, Virginia, and is planning to double major in biology and international studies. |
| Student Athlete of the Week for September 28 is Sara Nunnally '12 of the Hollins golf team. Sara had a great performance last weekend at the Piedmont College Fall Invitational, placing third overall in the tournament and shooting the lowest competitive round of her career at Hollins. Deservedly, she was named to the All Tournament Team. Sara is from Wilmington, North Carolina, and is majoring in art history with an arts management certificate and a minor in business. |
| Katie Furches '10 was Medal Class Champion and two teams from Hollins finished among the top six as Hollins hosted the Tournament of Champions Pre-Season Classic horse show on September 26 and 27. Furches rode "Piece of the Rock," one of Hollins' own horses, to the individual title. In the overall team competition, Hollins' "Green" and "Gold" teams finished fifth and sixth, respectively. |
| Student Athletes of the Week for September 21: Anne Ailstock '11 and Sarah Budrus '11. This past weekend the Hollins tennis team played two nationally ranked teams, Washington and Lee and Mary Washington. Anne and Sarah competed in the top A flight for doubles and beat Mary Washington 8-6. As a team they played strong and showed excellent teamwork. Anne is a junior from Dinwiddie, Virginia, majoring in mathematics. Sarah, a junior from Huntington, West Virginia, is also a mathematics major. |
| Destini Price '11 has been selected to represent Hollins on a statewide advisory council focusing on connecting private college students with top Virginia banks and corporations on internship and employment opportunities. Price is now serving on the Student Advisory Council for CAREER15, the innovative job placement network for students enrolled at the 15 private colleges and universities which are members of the statewide consortium supported by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC). Each institution is represented by one student on the Council -- students were selected on the basis of academic achievement and leadership on campus. |
| Kristen Norkus '12 of the Hollins soccer team is our Student Athlete of the Week for the week of September 14. In her past three matches, Kristen has not given up a single goal. As goalie for the soccer team this season, she hasn't been scored upon in over 300 minutes in goal. Kristen has 24 saves and three shut-outs for the season. Norkus, a sophomore from Gainesville, Va., is a film major with a minor in creative writing. |
| "The People Could Fly," an initiative led by Kalimah Abioto '10 and her sisters Intisar and Amenta, has been named one of the ten finalists for the Nau clothing company's first annual $10,000 Grant for Change, supporting those who instigate lasting, positive change in their communities. The mission of "The People Could Fly" is to uphold the dreams, ideas, and pursuits of young and emerging artists/thinkers/creators through the connecting power of travel, storytelling, and new media arts. |

| The Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University and myscoper.com presented spacescape, a multi-dimensional approach to viewing and participating in space at the Waterheater in Roanoke. | Tiffany Robinette '10, a studio art and psychology major, has been awarded a grant of artistic merit by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Awards were made to 13 students from approximately 150 applicants who are currently in undergraduate art programs across the state. Tiffany was selected because of the high quality of her portfolio of recent works in painting and mixed media. |

| Ashlee Oliver '11 was appointed to the Student Advisory Council of AAUW (American Association of University Women). Ashlee is a gender and women's studies and biology major at Hollins. |
| Chelsea Eichenbaum '10, who is majoring in international business, was selected as a recipient for the nationally competitive Freeman-Asia Award. Eichenbaum will receive a $7,000 grant from the Freeman Foundation to support her yearlong study abroad experience on the Asian Studies Program at our partner institution, Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. Freeman-ASIA Award recipients are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia by others, and to spread greater understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home communities. Chelsea plans to organize an international fair at Hollins when she returns to promote the Asian culture, and study abroad in general. In addition to the Freeman Award, Chelsea was also chosen as a recipient of a Bridging Scholarship for Study in Japan, offered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project (ATJ). Chelsea will receive $4,000 to assist with travel and living expenses associated with studying abroad in Japan for the year. |
