FAQS

How does an online writing workshop work?

Online writing workshops are geared to suit your needs, and to work around your schedule. The online workshop allows you the flexibility to access weekly writing assignments, discussion boards, and craft lectures. You can access this information anytime from anywhere with an Internet connection. Whether through a chat room, a threaded discussion, or a live interaction, the online format provides a multitude of opportunities to improve as a writer and to connect with your instructor and your classmates.

Who will be teaching the workshops?

All of the instructors are graduates of Hollins University’s graduate program in creative writing. They are all experienced teachers who have published extensively within the genre they’re teaching.

How long is each workshop?

All workshops are eight weeks.

How much time should I expect to spend on these workshops? What does a typical week look like?

Though this varies from person to person, the workshops are designed to take three – four hours each week (including the “live session”). This consists of brief reading assignments, weekly writing prompts, and participation in the classroom conversation via discussion forums and live sessions.

How often will there be live sessions? When will these occur?

You will be able to access the workshop whenever it suits your schedule. Each week, there will also be an hour-long “live session” in which your instructor will be available to you. Live sessions are not mandatory and are scheduled by the instructor. If you’re not able to attend these sessions as they’re happening, a recorded archive will also be available.

I have no experience in creative writing. Can I still take a workshop?

There are no prerequisites for the Tinker Mountain Writers’ Workshop. Workshops are designed to benefit both the novice and the practiced writer. While experience in writing workshops is welcomed, it is not required.

Will I need to purchase books?

When you complete the workshop registration, you’ll receive a list of workshop materials, which will include pertinent information regarding reading materials.

Will I receive a degree or credit at the end of the workshop?

These are noncredit workshops and cannot be applied toward a degree.

When should I plan on enrolling to secure my spot on the roster?

All of our workshops are limited to 15 students in order to ensure that each student receives quality and comprehensive feedback. Because of these size limitations, we encourage students to register early.
