Instructions for using netLibrary

Creating a User Account
For authentication purposes, it is necessary for all Hollins users to create an individual user account. With this netLibrary account you have access to all of the eBooks in Hollins' eBook collection, as well as thousands of eBooks in the netLibrary Public Collection. When conducting a search you are also able to search eBooks that are not owned by Hollins' eBook collection.

1.

To create a user account, click the Create an Account button on the main navigation bar or the link at the bottom of any netLibrary page.

2.

Enter your name and other identifying information in the fields provided. You can include letters, numbers, spaces and standard punctuation. User names are not case-sensitive, but each user name in the netLibrary system must be unique.

3.

Enter a security question and answer, and complete the rest of the account information. The security question will be used in case you ever forget your password.

4.

Click Submit to create the account.

5. If you are a distance education student and are working from an off-campus computer, we have to create an account for you. Email us at askref@hollins.edu or call 540-362-7465. Once the account has been created, it can be used anywhere, on- or off-campus.

Note: All user IDs and passwords must be unique. This means that different users cannot simultaneously use the same ID or password.

Search Tips for Locating and Searching for eBooks
There are several ways to locate specific eBooks in a netLibrary collection.

 Search Options
You can choose from several different options to locate an eBook. Depending on the type of search, some of these options may be unavailable.

Quick Search

Quick Search lets you easily locate an eBook. You can use this search without logging into netLibrary. However, to browse or check out an eBook you must create a user account and log in.

1.

On the netLibrary home page, enter search information in the Search box displayed at the top of your screen.

2.

Select a search option from the list. You can search Keyword, Full Text, Title, Author, or Subject.

3.

Click Go to start the search.

Note:

  • To help novice or inexperienced users easily locate information when performing a Quick Search, netLibrary automatically expands the search to include all variations of a word. For example, if you enter the search term flower, netLibrary also searches for the words flowering, flowers, flowered, etc.

Power Search

Power Search locates an eBook by Title, Author, Subject, Keyword, Full Text, Publisher, Publication Year, ISBN or any combination of these criteria. In addition, Power Search allows you to customize your search results display; you can order your results by the number of occurrences of your search words, author, title, publisher, or publication year.

1.

Click the Power Search button on the navigation bar.

2.

Enter search information in one or more of the fields displayed.

3.

Select an option to either search eBooks owned by your library, search eBooks not owned by your library, or search the netLibrary Public Collection. eBooks that are not part of your library's collection will be marked in the search results with an asterisk (*).

4.

Select options to determine how the search results are displayed.

5.

Click Search to start the search.

Note:

  • You may reorder your search results, after the search is completed, by using the Display results by dropdown list on the search results page.

Command Search

Command Search lets you create a free-form query to locate an eBook. Use this powerful search feature if you are familiar with Boolean operators and with building search queries.

Use the following two-letter codes when building a Command Search:

ti: title

fu: full text

Au: author

pu: publisher

Su: subject

da: date

Ke: keywords

is: ISBN

A sample Command Search query might look like this:

au:bly and ti:writers and da:1995-

This search query performs a search of items authored by Bly, with the word "writers" in the title, published in or after 1995.

Note: Command searches can be optimized to some degree by grouping category codes. For example, if you want all eBooks with the word "blue" in title and the subject phrase "civil war" but not the subject "navy", you should compose the following query grouping the subject codes together:

ti:blue and su:"civil war" not su:navy

Using Boolean Operators in Your Search

You can use Boolean operators with Power Search and Command Search; Quick Search does not support the use of Boolean operators. If you do not specify an operator, netLibrary uses the Boolean AND operator to join the search terms you entered.

Note:

  • Terms used with the NEAR operator cannot use the * or ** operators.
  • A single quote " is automatically given a closing quote " at the end of the search terms. This cuts down on search query typing errors, but it may not give the results you expect. For example, if you want to search for "as you" and "Shakespeare" the correct query is:

    "as you" Shakespeare
    - or -
    Shakespeare "as you

Search Results

Search results are usually arranged by number of occurrences (based on the frequency of your search terms). netLibrary returns a maximum of 300 search results. The amount of information displayed depends on whether you choose the Brief display or Full display option before starting the search.

When using the Power and Command Search functions you can select the order in which you wish your search results to appear (number of occurences, author, title, publisher, or publication year) before performing the search. You may reorder your search results, after the search is completed, by using the Display results by dropdown list on the search results page.

Search results include title, author, publisher and publication year information. To view more information about the book before reading or checking it out, click the title. A book summary page ("About this eBook") is displayed.
