EBSCOhost gets a new, improved lookEBSCOhost 2.0

EBSCOhost, one of the library's largest full-text search providers, has a new interface with enhanced options for managing your search. Improved features include:

  • Preview articles by moving your mouse over the summary
  • See related articles and images with a single click
  • Narrow down your search by subject, type of article, person, place, or more.
  • Customize how you view your results (click on "Preferences")

Many of our databases will use this new interface including Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, Communications and Mass Media, Environment Complete, ERIC, American History/Historical Abstracts and the Religion and Philosophy Collection.

If you have any questions about the new search interface, contact the reference librarians at 362-7465 or askref@hollins.edu.

If you would like to see a demonstration, stop by the library or make an appointment for a librarian to come to your campus office. (posted 7/16)

More Full Text; OneFile Discontinued

Starting July 1, the campus community will have access to a significantly expanded suite of databases provided by EbscoHost: Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, Education Research Complete and more.

These resources present a significant increase in the library's offerings of full-text content from peer-reviewed academic journals, newspapers and magazines, particularly in the area of business and education.

They are also a cost-saving for our library and other member libraries in VIVA, the Virtual Library of Virginia consortium.

Note: Academic Search Complete will replace Academic OneFile, the Gale database, which will be unavailable as of July 1. Other Gale databases such as the Literature Resource Center and the MLA Bibliography will not be affected by this change.

Look for more news this fall to highlight these new resources. (posted 6/23)

New Databases for Theatre, Children's Literature

Theatre in VideoTheatre in Video contains more than 250 full-length plays and 200 video documentaries and interviews in streaming video. Plays included are the most important productions of the 20th century starting in 1930: works ranging from Shakespeare to Saroyan, from Moliere to the Wooster Group, from Ibsen to A.R. Gurney.

You can search this database in a variety of ways including genre, date, and producing company; you can also create playlists and bookmark your favorite scenes. Try it out.

The Children's Core Collection is an online version of Wilson'sChildren's Core Collection Children's Catalog. This annotated list of preschool through 6th grade children's fiction (including picture books and graphic novels), nonfiction and magazines also includes quotes from reviews.

Search methods include basic information plus subject and keyword. This is a great addition to our other children's literature databases, Children's Literature Comprehensive database, Award-Winning Children's Literature and ABC-Lit. Try it out.

Ask us for a demo of these great new resources! (posted 6/9)

New Look, Same Function - Find Journals by TitleJournalfinder

When you use Journalfinder to find out whether the library has a certain journal, magazine or newspaper in full text, you will notice a new look. Nothing has changed, however, about how it works: you can still search this database to find out whether our library has access to the full text of your journal citation.

Both online access, and access to the print journal can be found via Journalfinder.

Just click on the Journalfinder link on our e-resources webpage, enter your title and you will be taken to a list of databases containing the journal, including the dates of coverage. Click on advanced search to search by subject, or by ISSN.

If you have any questions, ask a reference librarian for assistance. (posted 6/9)

Browse the DVDs

Now you can browse our movies! After many requests from students, faculty and staff, we have moved our DVD collection to the library's first floor for your browsing pleasure.

When you find the film you want, just take the empty box to the first floor circulation desk for checkout - we will retrieve the disc for you. It's that easy.

VHS, laserdisc and other formats will remain downstairs; ask for them at the circulation desk by call number.

Tips for finding films

1. To find the call number for a specific film, use the online catalog. For tips on how to search for films by title, genre, director and more, click here.

2. DVDs will be organized on the shelf in call number order, which are assigned as we receive them. The most recent DVDs we have received will have the highest call numbers - look for new titles at the end of the shelf.

If you need help finding films, just ask any library staff member for assistance.   (posted 5/21)
