FIRSTGOV

FirstGovs best use: a basic search portal for government services or information. It is a huge electronic information directory w/a strong search function, but also easy-to-navigate subject menus. The information is organized by subject category, and targeted to several different audiences.

Point out FirstGovfeatures:

  • Find Agencies A-Z, or by Branch (use Branches :to give a good overview of government structure (GOVT 7)
  • Contact Your Government: contact information
  • Reference Center has useful research categories. Note Student and Teacher Resources
  • Search using Information By Topic. Example - Environmental issues, (GOVT 16c)
Scroll to ìEnvironmentî: a complete list of all government agencies that have to do with the environment. Further down, see more specific topics links on this subject.
  • By Audience: Kids this page is organized by subject ñ a portal page designed specifically for children with government, .org.edu and even a few .com sites. Each site indexed here has to comply with a stringent set of standards which ensure child-appropriate content. Note this is not just for little kids, for example:click on Government category. Try ìEnactment of a Law", which takes you to Thomas and gives the user detailed info on the legislative process appropriate for middle/high school level,(GOVT 4E, 7A) (For more on this check out Benís Guide to U.S. Government)
  • Track current events under "News and Features": recent or see list by agency.
  • FAQs (@ very bottom) ñ this is a portal to every federal agenciesí FAQ page ! Search by topic or by agency name.

NOTE: "(GOVT. ##)" or "(VUS ##)" refers to the corresponding Virginia Standard Of Learning (S.O.L.).
