Government Documents: History Journals

Wyndham Robertson Library has a number of print journals and e-journals available for historical research:

GOVERNMENT JOURNALS
Titles such as the Department of State Bulletin, Problems with Communism and Economic Indicators can be found using our online catalog. Some older volumes may be on  microfilm; they are located on the first floor near the maps collection. If you'd like to know whether a government journal is included in any of our full-text online databases or indexes, check the title in Journal Finder (see below).

SCHOLARLY JOURNALS
The library subscribes to a number of US history journals. Access to more than 100 full-text history journals is available online through the library's database subscriptions to EbscoHost's Academic Search Elite and Infotrac's Expanded Academic Index. Access to both of these databases through the library's e-Resources page.

Once you have chosen the articles you'd like to read, use Journal Finder to search for the journal titles in our library collections. If we don't have the journal or volume you need, you can also request your article through Inter-Library Loan.

If you need help with any of our databases or indexes, ask a librarian for assistance.

We also receive journals in paper: The American Historical Review, The Journal of American History, Journal of American Studies and others. The most current issues of these journals can be found in the Lewis Reading Room on the first floor, while back issues are shelved on the ground floor of the library. Search the online catalog for titles.

Finally, the library has full runs of popular news magazines and newspapers on microform dating back to the middle of the 19th century, including Harper's Weekly, Atlantic Monthly, and The New York Times. Non-government microform are also located on the ground floor.

TIP: keep in mind that electronic databases have not been around for very long - for example, Expanded Academic Index only contains articles published since 1980! For older material you may have to search using a print index such as the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, or the New York Times Index. These titles are found in our Reference section.
