Federal Depository libraries have been around since 1813. We receive publications from the Government Printing Office at no cost, so we may make them available to the public. The combination of local, no-fee, unrestricted access combined with expert preservation and assistance makes depository libraries a unique example of successful legislation in action; nowhere else can citizens have access to such a wide range of current and historical government information. There are several dozen depository libraries in our state: public libraries, academic libraries and the libraries of several government agencies. Virginia is also served by a Regional Depository at the University of Virginia.
