Student Computer Requirements

If you are thinking of purchasing a desktop or laptop computer or wondering what computing equipment meets Hollins’ specifications for compatibility with our network, here are some answers to your questions.

There are a number of places on campus where students with laptops and wireless cards can connect to the Hollins network as well as the internet. You are encouraged to bring a laptop (preferred) or personal computer with you.

All dormitories are network ready. We offer "one port per pillow" access, meaning that each student has access to her own network connection in her room. Once on the network, you have access to all Hollins’ electronic resources, including the online library catalog, academic software, and e-mail. Computer systems connected to the network must have an Ethernet card in order to communicate with the university network.
Wireless access is also available in the dorms.   The following amenities are available to residential students: Internet access, cable TV hook-up, and room telephone with free local calls and extensive message options.

Specifications Hollins requires the following configuration to ensure compatibility with the Hollins network:

Recommended PC Configuration
Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista (Business, Enterprise or Ultimate editions, not Vista Home editions)
Older operating systems are not supported.
1 GB RAM
Category 5 10/100 network cable with RJ-45 connectors (14' is adequate for most dorm rooms).  These are not typically included when you buy a computer.
Any 10/100 Ethernet card (a.k.a. network adapter, network interface card)

*   Please note that PCs running Windows Millennium and Windows 98 or older are not compatible with our network. Windows 2000 is no longer supported on our network.

Dell deal: Through a special relationship Hollins has with Dell, you can purchase or lease Dell equipment at discount prices.

If you wish to contact Dell by phone, call (888) 973-3355. The Dell representative you speak with will be knowledgeable about the Hollins package.

Desktop or laptop? The choice is purely personal. Desktops are less expensive and are more durable and comfortable for many people. However, many prefer the flexibility and portability of a laptop, which can, for instance, be used from any seat in the Wyndham Robertson Library. Wireless access is available in academic buildings and the dorms..

Software   We use Microsoft Office 2007 Professional in our labs.  We will be selling Office 2007 Professional Plus to students at checkin for $100.00.

Internet access, modems, and e-mail. The Hollins network is an Internet Service Provider (ISP) for the campus. In that capacity, all students receive an account for network access, and an e-mail account at the Hollins.edu domain. You will not need to subscribe to AOL, Hotmail, or any other service to gain access to the network. In fact, software for some ISPs is incompatible with the Hollins network and can cause connection problems.

Computer labs. While we encourage you to bring a personal computer with you, there are six computer labs available at no charge; five are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These labs have Windows-based PCs, laser and color printers, and a few Macs.

Mac Computers:

Hollins is predominately a PC campus.  A limited number of Macs are available.  Following is the configuration we recommend for students bringing Macs to campus in Fall 2007

Recommended Mac Configuration
Mac OSX Version 10.3.9 or higher
512 MB  memory
Any 10/100 Ethernet card (a.k.a. network adapter, network interface card)
Category 5 10/100 network cable with RJ-45 connectors (14' is adequate for most dorm rooms)  These are not typically included when you buy a computer
Apple Airport for the wireless "hotspots"
