| Student Computer Requirements If you are thinking of purchasing a desktop or laptop computer or wondering what computing equipment meets Hollins specifications for compatibility with our network, here are some answers to your questions.
There are a number of places on campus where students with laptops and
wireless cards can connect to the Hollins network as well as the
internet. You are encouraged to bring a laptop (preferred) or personal
computer with you. All dormitories are network ready. We offer "one port per pillow" access, meaning that each student has access to her own network connection in her room. Once on the network, you have access to all Hollins electronic resources, including the online library catalog, academic software, and e-mail. Computer systems connected to the network must have an Ethernet card in order to communicate with the university network.
Wireless access is also available in the dorms.
The following amenities are available to residential students: Internet access, cable TV hook-up, and room telephone with free local calls and extensive message options. Specifications Hollins requires the following configuration to ensure compatibility with the Hollins network: |
Dell deal: Through a special relationship Hollins has with Dell, you can purchase or lease Dell equipment at discount prices.

If you wish to contact Dell by phone, call (888) 973-3355. The Dell representative you speak with will be knowledgeable about the Hollins package. Desktop or laptop?
The choice is purely personal. Desktops are less expensive and are more
durable and comfortable for many people. However, many prefer the
flexibility and portability of a laptop, which can, for instance, be
used from any seat in the Wyndham Robertson Library.
Wireless access is available in academic buildings and the dorms.. Software
We use Microsoft Office 2007 Professional in
our labs. We will be selling Office 2007 Professional Plus to students at checkin for $100.00. Internet access, modems, and e-mail. The Hollins network is an Internet Service Provider (ISP) for the campus. In that capacity, all students receive an account for network access, and an e-mail account at the Hollins.edu domain. You will not need to subscribe to AOL, Hotmail, or any other service to gain access to the network. In fact, software for some ISPs is incompatible with the Hollins network and can cause connection problems. Computer labs.
While we encourage you to bring a personal computer with you, there are six computer labs available at no charge; five are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These labs have Windows-based PCs, laser and color printers, and a few Macs. Mac Computers:
Hollins is predominately a PC campus. A
limited number of Macs are available. Following
