| The Hollins Network
Computer Services has a Microsoft network with
servers that run Unix, and Windows Server 2000 and 2003. The computers in
our labs run Windows XP. All computers and devices are linked
through a sophisticated high-speed fiber optic network that connects
the academic buildings, offices, and every student residence.
The labs provide access to the MS Office suite, mathematical software,
programming languages, web page creation packages, and statistical
software among others. Printing to networked printers is available
from all labs and student residences.
The Internet and World Wide Web services are available through networked computers in the Computer Labs and faculty and staff offices. Students may also connect their personal computers in their dorm rooms to the network. The Internet facilities allow the Hollins University community to send and receive mail, exchange documents, and share a wealth of resources available on the World Wide Web. The network also provides access to the shared catalog of the Hollins University and Roanoke College libraries.
Every dorm has one network connection per bed, so all students
have individual access to the campus network and all resources
from their dormitory rooms.
Intranet (hollinsnet):
Hollins University maintains an Intranet called Hollinsnet.
It is used to disseminate information pertinent to the University
community. The weekly newsletter and calendar of events are available
in this manner. A number of professors use Blackboard and the
Intranet to provide their classes with syllabi, assignments, tutorials,
and other class information. It also provides information about
Computer Resource Center reservations, hours of operation, the
library, and numerous other areas of interest. The address for
the intranet is www1.hollins.edu.
