Italian StudiesA special exchange program enables Hollins students to enroll for one semester at several universities in Italy through the Arcadia University Center for Education Abroad. You may enroll in the Umbra Institute in Perugia, or the Accademia Italiana in either Florence or Rome. Each of these programs is located in the center of historically and architecturally rich cities. The program in Florence is intended primarily for students of art and design with courses in Italian cinema and literature among some of the many offerings. The Umbra Institute in Perugia is intended primarily for students of art history and offers courses in Italian baroque and Renaissance art. If you are an international business major, you may be interested in the new business concentration at the Accademia Italiana in Rome. As with the other two programs, all courses are taught in English with the exception of the Italian language courses. In Rome you may also select from courses in classics, history and fine arts, to name only a few. Regardless of your major, students in all of the CEA programs are required to study Italian language. Housing is in student apartments. The program at the Umbra Institute is open to qualified juniors with a GPA of at least 3.0. Classical StudiesHollins students interested in classical studies are encouraged to participate in the Arcadia Center for Hellenic, Balkan, and Mediterranean Studies and Research, the program of the College Year in Athens or the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. Through an exchange with the Center for Education Abroad at Arcadia University, Hollins students of classical studies can study Greek language, history, and culture for one term at the Arcadia Center for Hellenic, Balkan, and Mediterranean Studies and Research in Athens. Students on this program take modern Greek language and a unique course called "Greek Key: Cultural Landscape," in which they use field research techniques to examine and begin to understand some of the complexities of contemporary Greek society. Other courses are chosen from among archaeology, ancient Greek literature, art, history, philosophy, ancient Greek and Latin, Byzantine studies, and modern Greek studies. Many courses include field trips in and around Athens. Participants live in apartments with other students in the program and Hollins provides a stipend for meals. The program of the College Year in Athens focuses on Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean from ancient times to the present. Classes are offered in archaeology, art history, classical languages, ethnography, history, literature, modern Greek, philosophy, political science, and religion. Students learn through firsthand experience with the sites, monuments, and works of art in Athens and the surrounding region. Students on the College Year in Athens live in student apartments and have their main meal each day in the program's dining room. The Intercollegiate Center in Rome offers study in ancient history and archaeology, Greek and Latin literature, and ancient art. A major part of the academic work focuses on a comprehensive and integrated course called The Ancient City, which includes frequent site visits and explorations, intensive museum tours and lectures, and travel outside Rome. Students on this program live and take their meals at the center. These programs are open to qualified juniors majoring in classical studies or related fields who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Please note: application through Hollins is open to Hollins University students only. |
