Jamaica Service Project

Description
Hollins organizes a mini peace corps project to an impoverished community in Jamaica. The service project takes place in Lucea in Hanover Parish on the Northwest Coast of Jamaica. The program has been in existence since 1988.

The students work on a variety of community-based projects ranging from teaching in the school system to working with the local infirmary to refurbishing community buildings. They also work with the children in a recreational capacity. All of the projects are designed to encourage better understanding of another culture. This objective is enhanced through the experience of living with local families and sharing their lives and walking to the various projects within the community.

Along with the service projects, the group participates in seminars and lectures by local community members on the sociological, political and educational structure of Jamaica and the Third World. There are scheduled tours to a rainforest as well as other scenic areas of the island.

Prior to departure from campus, the students participate in an intensive orientation class designed to fully prepare them to enter into the culture with confidence and ease.

Eligibility:
The project is open to qualified Hollins students in all classes.
