Hollins University About Hollins
Home > About Hollins

Since 1842, Hollins University has been a leader in liberal arts education for women. The value of a single-sex, liberal arts education is demonstrated by the wide range of careers that Hollins graduates successfully enter.

Each month, US Airways Magazine profiles a city the airline serves, and the May 2009 issue showcases Roanoke. A section on the valley’s higher education offerings cites Hollins for its nationally-ranked creative writing program, while the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum is highlighted among the region’s unique attractions. “Keys to the City of Roanoke, Virginia” is available online.

Campus and classes. Hollins is a private university located on a beautiful 475-acre campus in Roanoke, Virginia. The university draws some 800 undergraduates from 43 states and 11 countries, more than 85% of whom live on campus. The student/faculty ratio is 9 to one; 86 percent of our classes have fewer than 20 students. In addition, nearly 300 students are enrolled in our numerous coed graduate programs.

Learning, on campus and off. Students enjoy Hollins' challenging and supportive academic environment and our focus on individualized learning. Hollins offers engaging academic programs, superior teaching, and extensive study abroad, leadership, internship, and service opportunities.

Affordable? Yes! Our strong financial assistance program puts a Hollins education well within reach of our students. In fact, 99 percent of Hollins students receive some form of financial aid.

Coed Graduate programs. M.F.A.s in children's literature, creative writing, dance, playwriting, screenwriting and film studies and M.A.s in children's literature, liberal studies, screenwriting and film studies, and teaching serve ambitious men and women eager to pursue graduate education.

Praise for our programs. Hollins was named one of “America’s 25 hot schools” in the 2005 Kaplan/Newsweek How to Get Into College Guide. Hollins received an academic rating of four out of a possible four stars in the 2005 edition of The Princeton Review’s The Best 357 Colleges. Our nationally ranked creative writing program was singled out by Barron’s Best Buys for producing “more published writers than any other college its size in the United States.” And The Fiske Guide to Getting Into the Right College lauds Hollins as one of the “top women’s colleges in the nation,” and one of 15 “small colleges and universities strong in art and design.”

Hollins University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; telephone: 404-679-4501), to award the degrees of bachelor of arts, master of arts, master of fine arts, and certificate of advanced studies. Hollins is on the approved list of the American Association of University Women.
